Chapter Nine

Maile knew she’d been in the bathroom for too long. She had one last thing to do. Closing her eyes, she relaxed and mumbled quietly. Jolting her out of her prayers was the banging of a fist on the door. “Mahlah! Khalas!”

Maile didn’t know what he was saying, but figured he wanted her to wrap it up. Putting the phone back under her skirt in its hiding place, she left the restroom behind.

Jeff was standing there with the guard when she went out.

“Oh, hello. How’s Aziz?” she asked, trying to sound nonchalant.

The guard threw a fit. “His name Prince Aziz!”

“Not in this building, he’s not.”

The guard raised his weapon as though he were going to use it to give her a solid whack in the head. Jeff said something in Arabic, a command of some sort, and pulled Maile away.

“Hey, don’t antagonize these guys. You’re dead meat to them, someone in their way, an obstacle.”

“I thought I was supposed to be their next princess?”

“Right now, you’re simply a pain in the neck,” he said.

“Sorry to be so much trouble. Why not just show me and the kids the door?”

“Not gonna happen and don’t even think of asking the Prince for that.”

“So, what then? We’re just going to hang out doing nothing while Aziz has a good night of sleep in the king’s bed?”

“I’ve just communicated his demands to the mayor. Now, we have to wait until we hear back,” Jeff said.

“The mayor? Why aren’t you dealing with the federal government?”

“That’s the highest ranking politician that would answer my call. Apparently, that Abrams woman has already called around, telling everybody there’s a prank being played.”

“That…” Maile bit her tongue, wondering if she should mention the police were mounting a SWAT team invasion, if it would change plans being made inside the palace. “You realize talking to the mayor is going to bring police and the media here, right?”

“That’s what the Prince is hoping for. He figures the more attention he can bring to this, the sooner it’ll be resolved.”

“That’s what we all want. What are his demands? Am I allowed to know, since I seem to be at the center of all this?”

“He wants safe passage to his Gulfstream at the airport, along with exoneration from all charges filed by the federal government.”

Maile shrugged. “Okay with me. I’ll hold the door open for him. I might even wave goodbye.”

“No waving needed. You’re going with him.”

“Should’ve figured as much. What about the kids that are stuck with this mess?”

“As soon as I get the word that wheels are up, I let the kids go back to mommy and daddy.”

“And what about you? The Prin…Aziz is leaving you behind?”

“I have something planned. I’ve already been paid, and my job will be done by then. Believe me, Miss Spencer, I have as much interest in going to Khashraq as you do.”

“Speaking of the kids, one of them needs insulin. If she doesn’t get it pretty soon, she could go into a diabetic coma or have seizures.
