He was on a farm somewhere in the heartland, the strong breeze flattening the fields of wheat as it passed by. Blake gazed out over the horizon, but sensed something was off-kilter. The rooster in the barn crowed again. And again. And again.

What the hell am I doing in Kansas? Where is everyone? Why is that fucking rooster crowing so goddamn much?

He opened a sleepy eye and focused on the clock beside him. 8:45 A.M. He heard the rooster crowing again, and realized that was not part of his dream. That was real.

And apparently nonstop.

“Stop. By all things holy, please, God, make it stop,” he mumbled. He reached back with his free hand and felt for Cam. He felt only touseled sheets. Cam wasn’t there.

The rooster outside was joined by a friend who felt the need to answer back. The crowing became constant.

“Cam! Cam? Get me a gun. Please,” he called out, half-rising.

“What was that?” Cam said, entering the room. He was towel drying his hair, standing in the doorway in a wet black speedo.

“Ohmigod. Those fucking chickens! Be a good man and chase them off, will you?” He pulled a pillow over his head, and flopped back down.

Cam laughed. “That, I’d like to see. You’ll get used to them. Get up, you lazy bum. Let’s go take a run. Then we’ll drive up to the Princeville resort and hit the gym there.”

“Sadist.” Blake pushed the pillow off, and truly noticed Cam for the first time. “Did you go swimming? Without me?” He feigned hurt.

“The early bird, my love.”

“Well, you’re looking mighty fine there, Mr. Fuller. Wanna fool around?” Blake not so casually threw back the covers, exposing his taut naked body—and morning wood.

“As tempting as that is, no. Come on. It’s a beautiful day in paradise. Get up.”

“I’m up. I’m up.” Giving in, Blake got out of bed and padded over to the bathroom. “Just give me five minutes.”
