Secrets of the Church

The family gathered in the study waiting for dinner to be served. Stela entered to find everyone already there, though she noticed Edmund was absent. She went and took a seat next to her mother.

“I am glad you and Sofia were able to work things out. I don’t like it when my children don’t get along. I am too old to have to worry about my children like this. I don’t think she meant the things she said about Edmund. He loves you very much, but then again, I guess I am not one to gauge a man’s fidelity.” Madeline placed her hand on Stela’s.

Roderick came and sat next to the two women. Julianna was over talking to Orthia and Alex. “Mother, would I be able to speak with you after dinner, in private?” It took many years before either were comfortable with Roderick calling Madeline mother. Both agreed, in time, she was the only mother he knew so it only made sense. “It is the reason I am here, actually.”

“Of course, Roderick, I am always here for you, as I am for any of my children. I sense this is something urgent. Should I be concerned?” Madeline watched his eyes. She could always tell by her children’s eyes when they were worried.

“No, mother, nothing urgent. Just something I need to know but we will discuss if after dinner.”

Edmund entered just before the butler announced dinner was prepared. Stela approached her husband. “Sofia came to me and said the claims she made against you were made in anger. It would seem you have been pardoned once again.” She took his arm as they moved to the dining room.

The family took their places at the table. It was quiet while the footmen served the first course.

“Rupert, you appear to be in much better spirits now. I am glad.” Orthia was the first to speak and break the silence. Tension still hung heavy in the air. No one was certain that the sisters would not erupt again into an argument.

“Yes, Orthia. I am feeling much better, thank you. I am so happy to be with you all. It has been far too long since we had some private family time. I am looking forward to a most enjoyable evening.” Rupert looked down upon the soup that was ladled into his bowl. Spending the night at Rothmar was preferred to a quiet night at Dortham.

“I agree, Rupert. It is nice for us to be together. We need to try to find the time to do this regularly. It is unfortunate that the rest of you live so far away. Now that Rupert and I are closer, we could spend every evening together.” Charity realized as soon as she said it, daily dinners would quickly become battles.

“We could schedule weekly meals together. A way to catch up and discuss the events of the week,” Sofia was quick to add. “Even if Jacob was unable to join me, I would be free to travel.
