Itâs too good to be true. Too good to be true.
Thatâs the mantra thumping around my head. Thereâs no way things can be this simple and perfect between us; no way did the mail order bride program make the ultimate match.
I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. For the big revealâthe moment when the ground falls out from under me and Iâm back in my real, lonely life. For the sight of my perfect girl driving away through those gates.
âItâs getting late.â
Jessica yawns like a kitten, wide and unashamed. Her head tilts back and her eyes screw shut, and she makes this cute little squeaky noise. Sheâs done it three times in the last ten minutes, and if I watch it again I might explode.
My maybe-bride nudges her glasses up her nose. Sheâs bleary-eyed, curled up on my lap in front of the fire, the armchair groaning beneath our shared weight.
I jiggle her on my thighs. âYou should sleep.â
Jessica wrinkles her nose, shaking her head. âWe donât have long left, Murray. I donât want to waste any of our time together.â
Right. Thatâs the problem, isnât it? This isnât truly settled, not until 8am tomorrow when we make our decision. And though she keeps hinting that she wants me, that she might really like to stay, I wonât fully believe it until my ring is on her finger.
âCâmon.â I push to my feet without warning, scooping Jessica into my arms, and stride toward the hallway. âI donât want you associating me with a bad nightâs sleep. I want you fresh in the morning when you make your decision. Rested and happy.â
She makes a mumbly noise, then mashes her face against my neck.
Fuck, I love this girl.
And itâs agony, setting her down outside the guest room door and backing up two steps. Jessica blinks at me, confused, and holds out a hand. She wants me to go in there with her. Wants us to curl up under the blankets together.
I shake my head, stomach dropping. God, I feel sick. âNot tonight. Just because weâre on the clock doesnât mean we should rush this part.â
It sounds good and rational and I mean it too, but itâs not the whole reason Iâm not going in there with her. Itâs not even most of it.
And Jessica blinks, so cute and owlish in those glasses. Her hand falls back to her side. âOh. Okay.â
She looks so small, standing in the doorway, and when she whispers goodnight and closes the door behind her, she does it so softly that it barely makes a sound. Sheâs unsure of herself again, and itâs like she canât bear to take up space. Doesnât want to make a noise.
I stare at the guest room door, dry eyed. My heartâs pounding.
Iâm such an ass.
This is about me, not her. My insecurities. And even though I know that, though I want more than anything to push that door open and join her inside, I donât. I turn on my heel and stride down the hall.
