Chapter 12
âFancy meeting you here,â I said in greeting, looking around for Liam. âWhereâs Rumpleforeskin?â
âYouâre a modern-day Shakespeare, truly. Heâs following up a lead. Iâm interviewing a couple of the survivors here at the hospital today. Iâve just come back from meeting with the explosives expert. Who are your friends?â
âPoppy, Ophelia, this is Detective Jake Llewyn. Heâs one of the detectives working this case. Iâve worked with him before; his partner, Liam, is the reason shampoo bottles have instructions, but Jake can be trusted.â
A knowing smile crossed Opheliaâs face. âYes, that the two of you are in a relationship tells me you trust him.â
âSeriously?â I asked, my mouth dropping open. âHow?â
âI told youâsecrets are impossible when sheâs around,â Poppy said, shaking her head.
âAre we really that obvious?â Jake asked. âWhatâs your connection to this case?â
âYes, and weâre investigating on behalf of Valantir,â Ophelia replied. âCharlieâs team and mine have joined forces to gather information and find the person responsible for this attack. What did the explosives expert say?â
Jakeâs gaze moved from one of us to the other.
âItâs fine,â I said. âWeâve checked them out. Theyâre telling the truth. You can trust me.â
Jake considered my words for a moment then nodded and leaned casually against the hood of his Charger. I tried not to think about how much I wanted to tear his clothes off right now. Okay, maybe that was why Ophelia had instantly picked up that we were a couple.
âWe learned a decent amount,â he said. âThey confirmed that a burner cell phone was used to set off the bomb. Basically, as soon as someone called the burner cellâs number, the fuse was triggered and the bomb was set off.â
âDo they know what the bomb was made of?â I asked.
âThe bomb maker used peroxide explosives, common ingredients in homemade bombs. This specific one was TATP.â
âIâve never heard of it.â
âItâs what the shoe bomber used, or tried to, anyway,â Ophelia said.
Jake nodded. âThatâs right. It was also used in a number of terrorist attacks in Europe in the past twenty years. Itâs pretty easy to make with ingredients you can find at any pharmacy. Itâs also highly, highly dangerous. An explosion of even a single gram can cause injury. The bomb didnât have to be big. To give you an idea, TATP is about eighty percent as powerful as TNT.â
âHow easy is it to make?â Poppy asked.
âAnyone with internet access, nail polish, and hair bleach can get it done, if theyâre smart enough not to blow themselves up in the process,â Jake explained. âAnd you have to factor in that someone might have gotten lucky. However, the cell phone detonator is a little bit more complex. And thereâs also the fact that TATP is extremely sensitive. For this to have gone off the way the bomb maker intended, they would have had to be skilled.â
âThat leads us back to the theory that it could be someone linked to this group, rather than a random person trying to kill Tom Kidd,â Ophelia said.
