Back Together
I was cautious at first with Mallory, expecting one of her jealous, suicidal moods to erupt at any moment. Iâd been shell-shocked, after all. We slept together with some of the old feeling, and we went out to Yosemite and made love often in my van. She got a kick out of showing me the city, of riding the cable cars and of going to Muir Woods and Point Reyes, for it was the first time she was showing me things instead of vice versa, she said. But, ironically, she was a little set aback by my newfound zeal about TM and Maharishi. She still meditated sometimes, she said. But she was smoking dope with her friends and possibly dropping acid, all part of the scene. Meditation was nice and all, and Maharishi was cool, but only as a part of what was happening, not the whole show. She was attending Steve Gaskinâs hippie lectures Monday nights at the Family Dog and tooling around with some âfabulous freaks.â
She made a stunning hippie, and not only my love but my lust was enlivened. I wasnât sure what to make of this new being. Her old dependence upon me seemed gone, an independence emerging, her friendship with Jennifer flourishing, but whether her new strength would renew her commitment to me was another question. In spite of my original plan, I hesitated to ask her to come back with me and decided to let her bring the idea up herself. She did not, however. She seemed content to share her bed, her body and her delight in her new world, but returning to Columbus did not seem part of her thinking.
Nor did we broach the topic of her former madness. She presented neither explanation nor apology, though in her new world she had apparently left her depression far behind. Not a hint of suicide. I was encouraged. She seemed well. Our time there was devoted to sharing pleasure but certainly not to reaffirming our old magnificent unity. Nevertheless, whatever was happening seemed like progress. And there were times during that week when we were very, very close. I would wait.
