Around midnight, there was a knock on Dr Trott’s back door. When he opened it, he found Subhas Chandra standing there, looking grim. His voice too was tremulous. Dr Trott asked, ‘What is it, my friend?’
‘You are aware of Barbarossa, aren’t you?’
‘Barbarossa – you mean our plan of invading Russia? Forget it, my dear man. It’s just one more of the Führer’s eccentricities. I am sure he will not be so foolish as to attack Russia. In a land where a warrior like Napoleon also had to bite the dust, what can this clown of ours do?’
‘Adam, the date for the invasion has been fixed. Just a month and a half to go,’ said Subhas, sounding worried.
‘What date?’
‘21 June 1941.’
Trott’s breath was caught in his throat. ‘Where did you get this information from?’
‘From the Japanese Embassy. I have always been on very good terms with Japanese diplomats. A Russian secret agent called Sergei brought this news.’
‘How does this affect you?’
‘Adam, don’t sound so heartless.’ Subhas sounded even more hoarse as he whispered, ‘If Germany actually tries to invade Russia, my dream will shatter into bits. In fact, it was the pact of friendship between the two that raised hopes in me. I even contemplated taking advantage of the proximity of Russia’s borders with India to launch an attack on the British from there. Besides, if Germany and Russia go to war, Germany will become the enemy for our young Marxist intelligentsia, and they who supported me fully so far, will not hesitate to brand me an enemy agent.’
‘So what’s the solution?’
‘Germany must immediately acknowledge India’s independence.’
‘The Führer is fully intoxicated with the fumes of victory.’
‘Yes. He seems to have forgotten Bismarck’s fundamental principle – “Never take on two enemies at the same time”.’
