* * * * *

My day at Moonstruck Manor eventually passed. I cleaned up breakfast and tended to my plants in the garden, but there was no sign of Luke again. I kept glancing across the lake, looking for his shiny red Rolls-Royce or any sign he was over there, but the place looked empty. Not even any signs of guests. My stomach turned, a bit concerned something had happened, but when I pulled out my phone and shot him the text, “Heading home for the day,” he replied with, “Have a nice night, Miss Hunt,” and that was that.

I arrived home to an empty apartment. Sending a text to Tabitha, she replied that she had a wedding cake to finish and would be home late. I offered my help, but she said, “Please stay away.” I could have been offended, but I heard the laugh in her voice—even through the text. That left me able to focus on my date with Devin. Oddly, I was far less excited about it tonight than I had been on Friday when we set it up…but a lot had changed in my life since Friday.

As I was showering, I realized that Devin and I might have the apartment to ourselves while Tabitha was busy with her bakery order. I spent extra time on shaving just in case. There was nothing wrong with a single girl having two men who interested her. Whoever made the first move, would win.

Devin arrived promptly at seven, holding a big brown bag of groceries.

“What is it tonight?” I asked.

“A breakfast bake. Just like the quiche, we’ll prep it all tonight, and all you have to do is pop it in the oven tomorrow.”

“Delightful!” I held the door for Devin and helped him unpack the bag, telling him all about the cookbook and the spell Luke and I cast.

Devin rubbed his cheek. “I don’t like you getting involved like that.”

I laughed. “You don’t like me trying to solve a murder? You’re the one who put me up to this.”

“Yeah, but you’re supposed to stay at a distance. Now, we know someone took that book.” Devin came around the back half of the kitchen’s peninsula and took my elbow, turning me towards him. “Kyla, if anything happened to you, I’d never forgive myself.” He stood right in front of me, much closer than Luke and I stood earlier today, but the excitement I had experienced in the pit of my stomach with Luke was absent. Devin’s eyes were filled with sincerity and care, and I was flattered. But nothing more.

Oh, my. I was finally over Devin. Tabitha was going to love that realization I had just had when I told her tonight, as she was as obsessed with Devin and my relationship as I had been…maybe even more. “Everything is going to be fine,” I said. “It’s just a finding lost objects spell.”

“But if it brings the killer to you—”

“Stop worrying.” I shrugged out of his touch, suddenly feeling the need to put distance between us.
