The next day was a sunny and pleasant Sunday. Dan would be off work, so Mackie decided to call him and ask if he was free to take a walk at Lake Galena.

She understood she was showing vulnerability, but didn’t care. She liked Dan and wanted their relationship to progress.

There’s nothing like being a little proactive, she told herself as she showered.

After cleaning up, she dressed in shorts and a long-sleeved white pullover shirt. It was slightly cool for shorts, but she knew she had good legs and didn’t mind showing them off to Dan.

She drove to the lake, parking as usual in the lot adjacent to the nature center. Because of the good weather, the lot was a little crowded, but she was able to find a spot.

Dan was already there, leaning against his car, waiting for her.

When she got out of her car, he walked over and gave her a quick kiss.

“Hi,” she said, smiling at him. They linked hands and set out along the path.

Before they had gone a hundred feet, she was telling him about her conversation with Elise. As she had suspected, Dan was interested in the information about Carrie Matheson.

“And you hadn’t heard about her before?” Dan asked.

“No. I mean, I’m not surprised Bernard was dating, of course.”

“Mmm. I’ll have to check out Ms. Matheson for priors. That whole scam of hers makes me think she might have tried something else. The name doesn’t ring a bell right now, though. I appreciate you telling me about this,” Dan told her.

“Do you think she might be a suspect?”

He was silent for a moment. Then he said, “Right now, everyone is a suspect.”

“I hope I’m not,” she kidded. “Anyway, I’m always willing to do whatever I can to help the law enforcement community,” she said lightly, arching her eyebrows at him.

He chuckled and slipped an arm around her waist, and they walked that way for a while before he took her hand again.

This is turning out to be a good day, Mackie said to herself.

It was about to get even better.

They walked for several more minutes in companionable silence, simply enjoying the day and each other’s company when Mackie’s phone buzzed. When she saw who was calling, she almost dropped the phone.

“It’s the private detective agency.” Mackie’s voice was breathless. “It’s Leo Philbrick.”

“Take it,” Dan urged.

“Hello, this is Mackie Fleming.” She moved to the side of the trail to hear what the man had to say.

The voice on the other end said, “Mackie, this is Leo Philbrick. You haven’t forgotten me, have you?”

Mackie chuckled. “No, I haven’t. I was hoping you hadn’t forgotten about me.”

“Not a chance. The new place is done being renovated, there are only a few small things to be finished. We’ve moved in and are ready to go. Since I talked with you a couple of months ago, I’ve taken on a partner. His name is Jason Reeves. He’s a retired cop. So anyway, are you still interested in the job?”

A broad smile spread over Mackie’s face.
