Chapter twelve

Complicated

I walked out of Starr’s coffee shop with Joe and Aunt Judy fast behind me. The night was frigid, winter reminding us all that it was still in full swing.

“Watch your step, dear, patch of ice ahead of you.”

“Huh?” I said as my foot slipped. Joe reached a hand to steady me, chuckling.

“She’s still a slow processor.”

“Hey, now, watch it.” I stuck my tongue out.

Aunt Judy smirked, her brow raised. “Care to humor your dear old aunt for a cup of tea?”

“Of course!” I slowed my step and linked my arm within Aunt Judy’s. “Who knows. If you’re nice, the house may even rustle up some sweets to go with it.”

“At this hour?” She shook her head. “I hardly think it would be appropriate. Especially after all the cookies the pair of you ate.”

“I only had three,” Joe said.

Aunt Judy fixed him with a stare.

“Ok, maybe it was closer to five.”

“Mhm. How about instead of cookies, you take yourself up to Melissa’s loft and call your mother?”

“Yes’m. That’s exactly what I was going to do.”

“I thought so.”

I hid a laugh behind my hand. We reached the front porch of my cabin, and I dug around in my purse for my keys.

I sighed. “I know they’re in here somewhere.”

“Honestly.” Aunt Judy shook her head. “How many times must I remind you that you’re a witch?”

She wiggled her nose, and I felt the pressure of magic swirl around me. It was amazing how little effort it seemed to take my aunt to call out a spell. The keys floated from my bottomless pit of a purse out into the air, in front of my face.

“Thank you,” I said around a shrug. “I tend to forget to use my magic for small things.”

“You should be using it like second nature, dear.”

I unlocked the door. “What can I say? I live in a normal town. It might cause trouble overusing spells.”

Aunt Judy snorted. “You’d have to already be using your magic on a daily basis before it could qualify for overuse. Even then, you’d have a long way to go.”

We stepped inside, Aunt Judy smoothing her pinstriped skirt and handing me her coat. “I’m surprised you haven’t asked the house to winterize better. I’m sure House would be happy to accommodate some coat hooks and a place for snowy boots.”

The air buzzed around us, warming and running down my skin in a tingle. There, on the wall, now stood a set of sturdy hooks and a small bench underneath them with cubbies for boots and shoes. There was even a long rug.

“Thank you, darling House. I don’t know why she didn’t think to ask.”

The floors vibrated in an almost purr. What could I say? House liked my aunt. Lord knew I liked her, too, but she sure was in a mood tonight.

“Well, I’m going to go call my mom while you two have tea,” Joe said sheepishly and climbed the stairs to my loft. I chuckled as I watched him retreat.

“I think Earl and Pretty Boy are napping up there somewhere, just a heads up,” I whisper yelled at Joe.
