Chapter 18

“So?”

Fryla’s question, while succinct, packed a lot into the single word. When I first arrived for the lesson, she didn’t mention being accosted by an unclothed Hylpa or why he was in my hut at dawn. After an hour had passed, she couldn’t stop herself from inquiring.

Once she did, instead of rehashing the previous night’s activities, I asked her, “What happened to the tea you were supposed to bring over?”

She waved her hand dismissively. “When I told Loma what happened, he convinced me to forgo the delivery, certain you two would prefer not to be disturbed a second time.”

While I appreciated his advice, I cringed inwardly. Her husband knew, too? It was only a matter of time before Hylpa and I were the talk of Pevlut. “Not to mention if I hadn’t already been drinking the smartweed, not having any this morning wouldn’t have really helped.”

“True, but I didn’t bring smartweed. I thought you might like some calendula to help with any wound repair Rixta hadn’t taken care of.”

Knowing she hadn’t brought breakfast because she assumed Hylpa and I had consummated our relationship softened my attitude. “Sorry about Hylpa. Given Tiag’s betrayal, he’s a bit overprotective.”

“Not that I enjoyed having a knife to my throat, but he’s quite…impressive.” Her waggling eyebrows made it clear exactly to what she was referring.

“You didn’t tell Loma that Hylpa was in the buff, did you?”

“I conveniently left that out,” she admitted. “But you still haven’t answered the original question. Was it everything you imagined?”

Apparently, I hadn’t distracted her enough. “No. It was much, much better.”

“See, I told you sex is fantastic with the right person.”

“He definitely knows what he’s doing,” I agreed. “Except for my chest bindings. That confused him.” Fortunately, I had multiple sets. “In my haste to get naked, I reduced the one I had on to short strips of useless material.”

Fryla nodded. “I’m sure all the other women he undressed had no need to constrain their breasts so they wouldn’t flop about while fighting or riding.”

“Or when trying to appear male. Once I had something to hide, I tried to keep them as unnoticeable as possible. Kept me safe more than once.” Not that I was particularly well-endowed, but even the slightest hint of roundness was enough to reveal my gender.

“It’s terrible you had to live like that.”

“It wasn’t so bad.” Better than staying with Mulda and Gettl. I decided to change the subject. “You’ll be happy to know Hylpa was already using black mushroom.”

“That does make me happy. Don’t stop the smartweed tea, though. The only…”

I interrupted her before she could continue. “I know, the only person I can trust to keep me safe is me. I get it. After all, that’s how I’ve led most of my life—depending on myself.”

“I know it seems as though Rixta and I keep repeating ourselves, but it’s for good reason.”

It suddenly occurred to me that the making of little Hylpas could be the motivation for rehashing the topic. “Has Hylpa gotten anyone pregnant?”

“I don’t know for certain, but I’ve heard rumors.
