Samara reached inside herself for her magic, feeling around for any nearby fire she could draw from. She wanted to form a fireball in her hand, something she could lob at an attacker, but as she spotted a nearby lamp on the wall and tried to steal its flame, she sensed the bracelet on her wrist drawing away her magic, limiting her.
âBlast it!â she hissed under her breath when her magic failed. The trail of fire that had been floating toward her disappeared, blown out like a candle. She was defenseless thanks to this stupid charm.
She was lucky Nico was with her. With this limit on her power, she really did need his help.
They were both looking from one end of the shelves to the other, trying to figure out what was going on, when Samara heard a creak and saw movement above her head. Looking up, she realized the bookshelf sheâd just pulled a book from was leaning, falling toward her. If they stayed here another second, it would hit the next bookshelf and create a domino effect, crushing her and Nico under its weight.
âNico!â she shouted, pointing up at it before trying to sprint out of the way. They were right in the middle of the shelves, so it would take at least three to five seconds to reach the end and be safe. Would she have that much time? That bookshelf was falling fast.
Nico looked up, his head jerking upright so quick that it almost looked like he snapped it, then he wrapped his one free arm around her waist and leapt forward. She felt the air fly from her lungs as they flew through the air, his quickness knocking the breath from her. She could only press her hands against his chest and stare as the tall bookshelves continued coming toward them at intense speeds. The shelf was so high and heavy that it shouldnât have been able to just topple over like that.
As the shadow of the shelf loomed over her, she shut her eyes and focused on Nicoâs heavy breathing, reassuring herself that he was taking care of her. He wouldnât let her die.
There was a loud crash, then the continued thump thump thump of more bookshelves falling one after the other to their right.
But Samara and Nico were alive and well.
She opened her eyes, peering over Nicoâs shoulder as he tried to catch his breath. The bookshelf was lying, face down, where sheâd been standing a moment ago. The only people nearby to see it were at the other end of the library, and their eyes were following the domino effect happening to the rest of the massive bookshelves. The library shrieked when she saw it and rushed to stop it with her own spell but she was already too late. Even with a telekinesis spell, this would take a while to set right again.
Samara couldnât see anyone who might have been the culprit, but she searched the faces of everyone across the room anyway, just in case one of them had done it.
