Chapter 8

War. Once again, he was involved in a war, marching along dusty roads engaged in that most base of human activities. Irvine had no idea what he was doing here. It had been one thing for him to involve himself when the attackers had come to his home, when they had stormed the keep and climbed the tower.

One thing to save the boy whose very fate was tied to his. And vice versa.

Another to volunteer to walk along the road, march alongside these elementals who seemed to hold no true life but some personality to battle. He had no idea why he had chosen to do it, no understanding of his own motivations. Except that he had been feeling useless, wasted doing nothing but brewing potions and working his recipes.

Which would have been insane to say to the alchemist of the past. How many times had he complained in his life about being bothered, being forced to do more than just create new potions? But somewhere along the way, when Yiis had arrived, when the wars had expanded and his friend had gone away with that winsome young lass, he had started feeling the need to do more.

To contribute beyond his potions. To do something beyond sitting at home.

So here he was, marching along the army, the ground being eaten up at an amazing pace. They would arrive at the village soon enough and all the worries that the boy and he had would come true – or not.

The sound of wings opening and flapping and a gust of wind caught his attention moments before the harpy landed on the ground beside him. Irvine suppressed the shudder that ran through him at the sight of the man. A shudder that had nothing to do with the man's species and everything to do with the look in his eyes.

He had seen those eyes before, among certain kinds of clientele. Nobles, cutthroats. People of ill repute that lusted after blood, after death, after the pain that certain concoctions that Irvine could make could offer to others.

Bad times, desperate times, making those potions.

"What is it?" he growled, choosing to speak first to hide his fear.

Azimma grinned, disdain and disgust warring in his eyes. Still, Irvine felt the connection, the way the boy and Yiis could hear them as the Scout spoke. "You were right. They have been reinforced."

"How many?" Matt asked, only a trace of fear in his voice. He had grown, that boy. Strengthened in his resolve, started transforming into the leader that they needed. It was a little sad to see that change and the naivete disappear. A greater relief.

"Not enough."

"I asked how many, not your battle assessment."

"Four more units, I believe. Two of those with heavy armour, two with bows and arrows by their side."

"Thank you," Matt said politely. "That makes them, what? Two light cavalry, four mounted archers, and three heavy cavalry?"

"And the Hero," Irvine could not help but point out.

“That’s nine units, all ground based. Two ranged, seven melee.
