Chapter twelve

Jealous

I was wrong.

I unlocked the door to my shop, balancing my latte carefully. I didn’t want another spilled cup of coffee and trust me, I so needed the caffeine. I managed to work a miracle and not drop my drink as I swung the door open and made my way in.

Pretty Boy flew from my shoulder to perch on the end of a bookshelf.

″Be good,” I warned. “No more chewing on the ends of covers.”

Pretty Boy squawked in response, ruffling his feathers in annoyance but heeding my warning.

I walked to the register and set my cup down and thought about where I should start. “Now,” I said, drumming my fingers on the counter, “what spell should I try to clean you up with?”

The store was still fully decked out Halloween style, and it looked amazing. As awesome as the décor was, and even though I didn’t think customers would mind the bats and pumpkins an extra day or two, I knew I’d feel better once it was all put away. Then, I could arrange the store’s décor how I wanted and perhaps wipe away some of the reminders of that horrible night.

Feeling brave, I decided to see if I could sweet talk Earl into working his clean up spell. It was far better than anything I could or would ever come up with. I dug in my bag for the treats I had brought over and hoped I picked a flavor Earl liked. Finding something suitable, I made my way toward the stairs that led to Joe’s apartment above the store.

I paused, checking my watch, and debated heading up the steps. It was barely seven in the morning, and Joe might still be sleeping. I sighed. I did so want to get this cleaned up sooner rather than later. As I was still trying to decide on what to do, the door to his apartment opened. A stroke of luck!

I smiled, looking up. “I was just going to knock and see if you were awake.” My smile faltered when I caught someone else standing at the top of the steps. There Amy stood, bedhead and all.

She stretched and yawned. “Joe’s still sleeping, but I’m an early riser. Oh! Is that coffee?” She bounced down the steps two at a time, and before waiting for a response, she crossed the floor to the front counter and took a long drink from my cup. “Thanks! I so needed this.”

I blinked. Then I counted to ten, slowly, in my head.

Earl came down the stairs next and wound his furry body around my legs. He must have done the clean-up spell because, within a moment, the decorations disappeared. I imagined they were all back in their boxes in my storage room, except for the ones Aunt Judy spelled here. I’m sure those were in her attic.

″Thanks,” I said, looking down at Earl. My stomach felt suddenly nauseous, and I glanced at Amy, who still stood by the register counter, drinking my coffee.

″It’s the least I could do,” Earl replied, his cat ears twitching.
