Chapter Nineteen

We burst through the opening. Nimbar’s claws dug through the ice as she spun to the side and stopped so fast I nearly flipped over her head.

Damon burst through the tunnel after me. His draugr reared up when he pulled the reins before he drew the beast up beside me. Callan and Naet were through next and then they surrounded me on all sides. Steam flew in streams from the draugr’s nostrils. Ice crunched under their weight as they stomped their massive legs. Their claws sunk deep, cracking through rock and ice as easy as hot knives through butter as Nimbar pranced about, agitated and excited. Her racing heart beneath my calves pounded as much as mine.

Damon lunged for Nimbar’s reins, bringing Nimbar under control. “Are you all right, Anise?”

It took me a moment to work some saliva into my mouth. “I...yes.”

“Why did you drop the reins?” Naet asked.

I twisted on the saddle to face him. “To let her have her head.”

“Anise, draugrs are dangerous beasts. You have to remain in control at all times.” Damon said.

Draugrs knew more than the alphas credited them with. “We were racing and I wanted to beat you. Nimbar did too.”

The beast snorted in agreement, rounding her neck to glance at me.

Callan tipped back his head and laughed. I was surprised and could only stare at him. His eyes twinkled. “On your beast too, Damon.”

“I’ve never seen Nimbar run so fast before,” Damon mused.

“Maybe because Nimbar wasn’t packed down with your massive weight,” Naet said.

“Anise probably weighs as much as your thigh,” Callan said.

“You couldn’t have been beaten by a better person,” Naet said. His direct gaze heated me up. Guilt and arousal warred inside me because I knew the magic that slipped out of my fingers had given Nimbar her blast of speed.

A flash of gold lit up the dome. Light reflected off the dragons’ faces, thankfully stealing their attention away from me.

A dragon swooped to the surface of the dome, gouging the surface with its claws. Showers of golden sparks erupted, but it remained impenetrable. The dragon roared in pain and its claws glowed gold before morphing black. Other dragons swooped the dome, despite causing them pain. The attack was relentless and useless.

“The magic is hurting them,” I said. “It’s too strong for them.”

A dragon tumbled over the magical surface, its wings catching fire. He fell to the ground unmoving amidst the snow.

“Drisella is making them do it,” Naet said, all traces of fun gone.

“There’s no time to waste.” Damon speared me with a look that had me swallow hard. “We need to get down there and you will need to hide. Remain up here. Drisella can’t see you from where she is.”

The four of us were on the lip of a ledge, hidden by an outcrop of rocks. A narrow trail hugged the mountain on either side of the ledge, leading to the ground meters away from the magical dome. If I stayed where I was, I would be invisible to those below.
