Tragedy

“Okay, guys, we’ll call it a day there,” Mr Spencer called out over the remaining students. Luckily, no one else had been injured during the extended lesson, but after several hours of working on her offensive Magic, Katy felt like she’d really been able to get a handle on it. She could create a fireball or lightning attack without fail and had even managed to have a go at creating the forces by harnessing the kinetic energy from the movement of her own body.

That was much harder to do, though, and required much more focus, but she’d done it several times.

She was one of several of the more advanced students in the class who seemed to have a natural flair for Magic, compared to others who were still struggling to create their first fireball.

Felix hadn’t moved onto the conversion of kinetic energy, but he’d made impressive progress using the lighter and the battery.

“That was fun,” Felix said, smiling over at her.

“Yeah. You did good,” she said.

He smiled. “Thanks, but you’re way better than I am.”

Katy shrugged. “I don’t know why. It just seems to flow, maybe… I don’t know if that’s the right word or not.”

“You’re just a natural.”

“I guess. I don’t feel like a natural, though.”

“Believe me, you are.”

“Thanks, you’re very kind.” Katy looked over to Trenton and Dana, wondering if he was heading her way, but he wasn’t even looking at her. Instead, he was focused on Dana. The pair of them were talking happily, smiling, and seemed to be having fun.

As much as she might want to end things, seeing him with Dana, having a good time, pulled on her emotions, and she found herself actually feeling a little jealous, which was bizarre, frankly.

And yet, maybe this was for the best. If she really was going to dump him, then maybe Trenton could spend more time with Dana.

Katy screwed up her eyes and sighed, frustrated with herself and life in general.

“Hey, looks like you were doing well.”

Katy turned. Titus had walked over with Yuki and was smiling at her. She smiled back. “Thanks.” A quick glance to her right revealed that Yuki and Felix were also talking and not paying them any mind.

“You weren’t even using the lighter at the end.”

Katy blushed. “I was using kinetic energy and converting it.”

“That’s some pretty advanced stuff.”

“I don’t know…” Embarrassment clawed at her insides and burnt on her face.

“Don’t be modest. You were doing great. Better than I was.”

“Thanks.” She did her level best to accept the compliment and not minimise or brush it off, but doing so went against every fibre of her being. The Americans were so much better at accepting compliments than the British were. She desperately wanted to come up with some kind of excuse for her ability with Magic to minimise it and say how she was rubbish at a thousand other things. She fought it for what felt like an age before she couldn’t resist any longer. “Well, it was—”

“Stop it,” Titus said, cutting across her.
