Chapter 22 ~ Atlantis

Project Hathor was an unusual undertaking for the U.S. military. The Danjou Enclave was the primary force behind the initiative as they sought to bring about the fulfillment of the Oracular prophecy: “siren surgeon’s sight.” While cryptic, as prophecies offered by the Oracle of Delphi always are, the Danjou interpreted the Oracle’s statement to mean that their success in the coming war depended on enabling the pivot, Dr. Amy Bant, to see magick. As a result, their elders lobbied U.S. politicians relentlessly, until the project was ultimately funded in 2018.

The next morning, Amy was thrilled to discover that Jonah had opened all the blinds in the petite salon, so the room was flooded with light. Sunlight was so much more interesting than artificial lights. Today, the sparks in the air curled in a circular, meandering flow that swept around the room. She could hear the currents whispering some sort of melody.

While none of the rooms in Marisol’s large home were really designed to be classrooms, the petite salon was apparently the best situated for magick lessons because of its light. The werewolves had helped rearrange the furniture, pushing the sofas against the walls and carrying in a heavy mahogany table from the library to place in the center of their new “classroom.” Amy sat next to Jonah in one of the spindly gilt chairs and put her cellphone and notebook on the table.

“I still don’t understand how to make sense of any of this,” Amy said, twirling her pen between her fingers. Jonah had declared that Schema H-7 was the best fit for her perception, but he hadn’t explained how she might use the schema to understand the way the air seemed to move or why and how patterns and colors formed.

Jonah gestured at the book on the table in front of them. “The primer on Schema H-7.” The primer was double the size of an ordinary textbook, and almost as thick as the Merck Manual.

Amy stared at the textbook in dismay. From his position by the door, Colin sighed. His partner lay in wolf form in a patch of sunlight on the floor by the window. Amy supposed the wolves must find this instruction quite dull. After all, they couldn’t even see the magick Jonah was asking her to identify by color and pattern.

“It’s no different from learning a new language, Amy,” Jonah said encouragingly. “And Ted’s right, you’re a very fast learner. I promise it’ll begin to make sense in no time. You’re in an immersion program already. Look around: I bet you see swirls of green and blue and amber sparks circling around in a forward ‘S’ flow.”

“That’s right! Do you see that too?” she asked eagerly.

“No, my primary schema is F-2: I see black and gray dots connected by a reverse octagonal backwash. But I know the proper translation to H-7, which is how your mind is mostly interpreting the magick.
