Chapter 16 â Deep of Night
They passed no other travelers. Hester sensed the lake off to her left, and even though following it would take them to Norby Wind, she had no idea how long the trip might be.
âHow did you know that the magic would work?â Beast asked.
âI didnât before I attempted it, but I had to do something. Iâm so tired of not knowing what is going on. Pilteneauxâs kidnapping was the last straw. Iâm finished with allowing others to control my actions and my direction. Tonight was the last time someone will attack me and get away with it.â
âSo â¦â
âA split second before I lashed out, I knew that I had control. I canât describe how I knew; I just did.â
âBut you intended to kill them,â he stated plainly.
Hester rode in silence. She didnât think so. It had all happened so fast. In the instant she slammed her staff to the ground, she knew exactly who would fall and the damage she would do to them. Just as she had when she healed Malinâs leg, she felt every living thing around her and knew exactly how to put them to sleep and yet leave Pilteneaux alert. Sheâd healed people and animals throughout her lifetime, knowing the intricacies of knitting their bones and sinew back together, how to purge poison and sickness from them, and how to remove aches and pains. But what she could do now, on Slessia, was so much wilder. When she could catch the magic and use it without it taking her over, she held unimaginable power.
âHester,â Beast said, a single claw pressing at her wrist.
âWhat?â
âYou donât have control of it right now. Let the power go.â
She glared at him. âIâm not using magic.â
âThat may be so, but you are gathering magic to you. Look up.â
Lightning bolts streaked across the sky.
âThatâs not me.â
âI beg to differ. Let it go.â
She closed her eyes, thankful that Greenfoam wasnât a difficult horse. He plodded along the road without much guidance from her.
The core of her magic sparked wildly, flames arcing across to each other, attempting to reach beyond Hester. She slowed her breathing and focused on her staff, releasing the additional magic into it as she broke the connection sheâd made with Slessia.
This continent frustrated Hester to no end. One moment she knew exactly what she was doing and in the next, the wild magic had control of her.
âJust like that,â she said, allowing her frustration to lash out.
âLike what?â
âEven Slessiaâs magic wonât allow me to be in control. I didnât even realize that it had made a connection with me.â
âYou make it sound conscious.â
âIt acts like a spoiled child,â Hester said. âSometimes it obeys me and other times it wants to play. From the moment I got close enough to sense it, the magic felt fresh and young, but that canât be right.â
âNo, its magic has been around since the beginning of time, but very few have access to it. The gladir are quite limited in how they use magic and the few mages that come from other lands find it impossible to control.
