Twenty Two
Lunch over, the next thing on my agenda was the senior mage meeting to discuss new trainees.
Instead, I received a summons to the Imperium council.
There were two levels to it now, or so my briefing on it after being crowned had informed me. The top level was leaders or their deputies. The second level was ambassadors. The latter met most days, but the leaders only met when really necessary, or to ratify something agreed to at the ambassador level. So far, Iâd not been to a meeting yet, and had no real idea what to expect.
Imperium council meetings were held on Terminus station, in the system of the same name, several jumps from Haven in the almost center of the galaxy, and two jumps from Kelewan now the new jump point was active. The station was unique in not having any docking ports. Everyone who needed to go there had to walk using the rifts which connected it to every member. Since Iâd not been there before, never having had a reason to, Sixir and I walked.
The council chamber was huge. According to my briefing, the original circular table had been much smaller, but deliberately designed to have rings added to it to accommodate more members. Around the table and a distance back from it was enough seating to allow for retinues from every member. Sixir pointed me to where my seat was, and immediately behind it was already seated Ambassador Thenchant. Sixir went to sit next to him.
I was one of the last leaders in by the look of it, and quickened my stride to get to my chair, which was a distance from the door. I took the opportunity to cast a look around the table as I walked, but only knew less than a handful of people.
Everyone knew David Tollin, who was both Haven leader and Imperium council leader. Gitte was sitting in the chair for Karn, with an older woman still in white curse paint sitting behind her. Presumably Gitte was filling in for the Matriarch as her deputy, and the other was their ambassador. The Imperator was there as the Imperium military leader. I didnât know anyone else, but it was an interesting mix of species now, including a hollo of a Meerkat.
Bud arrived last, appearing behind his chair, and quickly sitting. While I knew he hated being the designated leader of Thornâs Cluster, his people wouldnât appoint anyone else but him, and his father was the ambassador, and like the rest, sitting behind him now.
The three of us were not the only mages present. Both Tanith and Syrinx had turned up after me, and taken seats behind me and Gitte, arriving just before Bud did, which was no accident I was sure. And that give me an inkling of what the meeting was for.
âThank you all for coming on such short notice,â said Tollin. âA short time ago, the Keerah ambassador forced his way into my office, and demanded the return of two systems weâd stolen from them.
