Chapter Eight

The ranch house had light blue siding and bright white window shutters. The yard was well-kept with a few bushes under the living room window and a small porch. There were a couple of bicycles in the driveway.

It was the home I’d grown up in, and I could feel both mom and Rosa inside, but no other mage auras. I was close to my mother, and Rosa and I had always gotten along, probably due to her being so much younger, she was just sixteen at a decade younger and entering her junior year of high school in a couple of months, late August.

I took after my mom, similar facial features, a soft beauty with light cheekbones and golden brown skin. She was three inches shorter than I was at five foot six, but had a similar lithe body type, dark brown hair, and dark brown eyes bordering on black.

My sister took after my father’s side of the family, though she had similar dark brown hair and eyes, and golden-brown skin, but her face had a strikingly severe beauty, and even at sixteen her curves were far more pronounced than mine, between athletic and lush. She looked a lot like grams on dad’s side, actually.

I just went inside, my youngest brother Diego was playing on the X-box with one of his friends, which explained the bikes in the driveway. He was the baby in the family at fourteen. Either he wasn’t a mage, or mages didn’t get their power until they were older than fourteen, and at least sixteen given my sister. I wasn’t going to bet against it, it would take time to figure out how it worked.

He looked surprised to see me, but I just winked and kept walking to the kitchen. I could tell by the auras Rosa was in her room, but mom was in the kitchen.

“Hi, mama.”

Maria put her hands on her hips, “It’s been too long, take a seat.”

I chuckled, “Sorry about that. It’s been a bit crazy since the mage thing three weeks ago. I saw you at the park the other day.”

Maria shook her head, “We didn’t see you, why didn’t you say hello?”

I grinned, “You did see me. I was the healer, Mia. I keep my magic hidden, let’s just say I was shocked to find out you and Rosa were mages too.”

She got a worried look, “The world is going crazy, what you’re doing isn’t safe.”

I shrugged, “I’m keeping my identity hidden, and the world needs hope. I’ll keep myself out of government eyes as long as possible. Do you two just know the nine spells?”

Maria nodded.

“I can give you a spell book if you want it. It has the spells you need to protect yourself and conceal your magic. Rosa too, how is she doing with all of this?”

Maria asked, “You think we should be involved?”

I shrugged, “Do as your called to do, but it wouldn’t hurt to develop your magic even if you don’t intend to make use of it in your daily life, if only to keep yourselves safe from the government and crazy mages.
