CHAPTER

FIFTEEN

Upon emerging from the shining portal, Ellyne found herself in a hallway, dimly lit by various technology on the walls with flashing lights and indicators she didn’t understand but also had no interest in.

Nicole and Marik filed in behind her, followed by Mack who sealed the shimmering door behind him. For a moment, they stood in near darkness until the light from the walls intensified.

“Huh,” Mack mumbled. “That’s new.”

“What’s new?” Ellyne asked.

“Er, nothing important. Come on, The Oracle is just beyond that door at the end of the hall.”

“That door?” Ellyne pointed to the plain, ordinary wooden door set at the end of the hall. “I mean, no offense, but wouldn’t a great, vaunted oracle have fancier accommodations? It seems a bit, I don’t know, anticlimactic?”

“Ellyne,” Nicole whispered, “don’t piss off The Oracle. At least, not yet. Not before we’ve had a chance to talk.”

They approached the door but before they could open it, a loud voice echoed through the chamber.

“Yes,” it boomed, “don’t piss off … the Oracle.”

“Great Oracle,” Mack said meekly, “we bring the Mage Breaker to you in hopes you’ll be able to help guide her in our struggle against our enemies! I have done as you asked.”

“I see. However, bringing the Mage Breaker to the Oracle was risky. You have no idea the power and danger she represents.”

“What the hell is up with this Oracle garbage?” Ellyne whispered to Nicole as The Oracle continued its monologue. “When did Karnascus become so … weird? I really do prefer the good ol’ days.”

“What days were those?” Nicole asked. “The days when you simply shot everything and everyone?”

“I have many fond memories.”

“Are you sure nobody followed you?” the Oracle asked.

“This is all new to me,” Nicole replied, whispering to Ellyne, “but let’s save the shooting for later.”

“Two years go by, Nicole, and you’ve never even heard of any of this? What were you doing all that time?”

Nicole frowned and wrinkled her face. “I was busy trying to fix magic and … find you. Which, by the way, was no easy task. Then I had to figure out how to rescue you and then there’s Marik and—“

“Okay, okay I get it. You were busy. I guess the Free People would be relatively secretive anyway. You don’t really advertise a rebellion I suppose. It’s probably bad for business.”

“Do you have something to share with the rest of the class?” the Oracle asked, its voice rattling Ellyne’s teeth.

“What? I mean, no. Wait, what’s going on?”

“You were interrupting me,” The Oracle replied. “It’s rude, and I don’t like it.”

“Well,” Ellyne grumbled, “tough shit. I’m trying to figure things out, here, and your overly loquacious, rambling speech was boring me. Besides, what’s with this crappy door?”

“What about it? The Oracle—”

“The Oracle,” she replied, mocking the voice’s tone, “sits in a technological bunker but resides behind a shitty wooden door that you can find literally all over the city instead of some advanced, sliding metal technological … what’s another word for door?"

“Ooh!” Nicole shouted. “A hatch?”

“Yeah, a hatch.
