Chapter 14
The new arrivals charged toward us across the desert, but none of them were firing yet. We were too close to Kistira and the troops remaining around her, and shooting now would risk hitting them.
That, at least, gave us an opportunity to start shortening the odds against us. If we could take these opponents down before the reinforcements arrived, then weâd have fewer opponents to deal with at once. And if we could get in close and stay in close, then maybe we could force them to fight us like that, without the advantage that laser guns gave them.
I rushed toward the nearest soldiers, flinging fire blasts. I hit one, but another dived clear, dodging the blast. I flung another, and as he rolled away, the fire hit the sand, melting its surface, creating a small disk of glass.
Seeing an opportunity, I threw more blasts past the soldier, melting the ground where he was about to tread. He slid on the unexpectedly smooth surface and found his balance before he fell. But in that moment of distraction, I shot more fire blasts at him, and some of earth, punching through his armor to take him down.
As the soldier fell, the glass shattered under him, razor edges dazzling in the sunlight. I hit the pieces with an air blast that flung some of them at another soldier, striking him with those pointed shards.
While the other Offenders closed with our enemies, I turned to face the reinforcements. If I could hold them back, even for a little while, that would improve our chances, too.
I took hold of the bird amulet, and this time, I called upon the power of air. I sent a string of wind blasts across the desert to hit the ground in front of the advancing troops. Like when Iâd been breaking the bars, I focused on quantity over quality, flinging out as many blasts as I could as quickly as I could. Sand billowed up where they hit, and the air there spun and twisted from the frequency of the blasts. The soldiersâ advance slowed as they found themselves walking straight into a sandstorm.
âThis is fantastic,â I said. âWe should fight in the desert more often.â
While their view was impaired by the sand, I flung more blasts at the soldiers, spikes of stone and bursts of flame hurtling through the sand and the wind to hit the leading troops. Some of them dived for cover, while others ran headlong into the whirling sand, trying to get to us as quickly as they could. In the chaos of the moment, their formation fell apart.
One of Jadeâs drones swept in over the advancing troops, firing as it went. Streams of tranquilizer darts dotted the black uniforms of the soldiers. One fell, but others kept going, their body armor stopping the drugged points of the darts. The drone swept in close and unleashed an electric charge instead, and two of the soldiers fell convulsing to the ground.
A soldier grabbed at the drone, and it backed hastily away.
