Chapter Seven

Mia

My pillow is warm and sticky. Okay, so maybe my head is the sticky one. I slowly open my eyes and find myself sprawled out on top of Lo. He’s still sleeping, and I take a moment to observe him. He looks peaceful when he sleeps, like the weight of the world isn’t on his shoulders. I smile as I study his face.

He really is gorgeous. He could have been a model in another life had he not gotten mixed up with the mafia. I wonder how it happened anyways. I don’t think we are to that point of this friendship for me to ask him. Hell, I still don’t know if I’m just another one of his hookups or if it’s something else.

I let out an involuntary cough and curse. Lo’s eyes pop open, and I watch as he looks around, allowing his eyes to focus.

“Morning, mio piccolo angelo.” He leans forward and kisses my forehead.

“Morning, Lo.”

“How are you feeling?”

“Good. A little sore, but good.”

A small wave of guilt shows on his face, and I kick myself for it.

“What can I do to make you feel better?”

“I have some ideas.”

He chuckles. “When did you become sex crazed?”

“I always have been, but I suppose we need a different term since we aren’t actually having sex.”

Even I can pick up the bitterness in my voice, and I cringe, waiting for his response.

“I’m not a good man, Mia. It’s for your own good.”

I sigh. “I know. It’s what you keep saying, but why don’t I get a say in this?”

“Because I’m twenty-nine and you’re twenty-one.”

“Age isn’t everything, Lo.” I glance up and meet his eyes.

He’s sexy first thing in the morning. He still looks sleepy, and his hair is standing up in different places. Add in his sweaty torso underneath me and my libido is already ready to go, even if my body is sore.

“No, but it’s important to me, Mia. You need to explore the world, not tie yourself down to me. Speaking of which, I also don’t think you should take Bash’s offer. Dr. Fields got herself in this situation. You have a big heart, Mia, but you can’t save everyone.”

I sit up and turn to look down at him. “That’s not why I’m doing this, Lo.”

He sits up and cups the side of my face. “Really? Then tell me why you want to tie yourself to the mafia for the rest of your life?”

“I don’t need to explain myself to you, Lo. You aren’t my boyfriend. You have no say in it.”

“If I agree to be your boyfriend, I can make this decision for you?”

He’s staring at his hands, so I can’t tell if he’s being serious right now.

“Fuck no. It’s my decision. If you were my boyfriend, your opinion would hold more weight, but I would still do it anyway. It’s something I feel I need to do.”

“If you do this, there is no going back. You will never have a normal life. No white picket fences, Mia.
