I take a deep breath and roll my shoulders. Lowell is beside me, his hand on the small of my back, as we stand in the drafty hallway. I stare at the closed wooden door, hearing the muffled conversation behind the rock walls.

“You can do this,” Lowell murmurs, and I feel a rush of pride flow down our bond as I lift my hand and knock on the door. The conversation stops and the sound of footsteps gets closer and closer.

“Katie?” An older woman opens the door, her hair stark white. She offers me a warm smile, her eyes bouncing between me and the werewolf for a moment before reaching out and wrapping me in a hug. “It’s good to see you.”

“You too, Mrs. Coleman,” I gasp as she tugs me tighter.

“You’re supposed to call her Your Majesty.” Coleman’s granddaughter, Chrissy, intones from inside the room. She’s only a few years younger than me, and would always visit me in the barracks whenever she was visiting her grandparents.

“No, you don’t,” I smile as Mrs. Coleman ushers us inside.

Their room is a different setup than mine. While my room is a beautiful studio, this is a three-bedroom apartment. We enter into an all-purpose room with three adjoining rooms and a bathroom. Mrs. Coleman walks over to the little kitchen-like alcove, complete with a sink, cabinets, and a full-size pantry. The large kitchen table is positioned between the kitchen and a sitting area with two large sofas, where Chrissy sits thumbing through a tabloid with Archer on the cover.

“Chrissy, come boil this,” Mrs. Coleman calls over her shoulder as she fills a tea kettle. Chrissy rolls her dark-lined eyes and calls a fireball to her hand as she crosses the sitting area. My body stiffens. Lowell is immediately there, his arm slung low around my waist.

“You’re okay,” he murmurs, as I struggle to breathe. I haven’t been around an open flame since the attack. I had no idea the sight of flames would trigger me so strongly.

“Katie?” Coleman comes out of one of the rooms off the main space, his warm smile dropping when he sees me. “What’s wrong?”

The healer gestures to the wooden table, and Lowell guides me into one of the five chairs. He stands behind me, placing his hands on my shoulders and simultaneously blocking my view of the kitchen. I reach up and squeeze the hand on my shoulder in silent thanks.

“How’s everyone settling in?” I ask Coleman, who eyes me and the werewolf curiously.

“Fine, fine,” he says. “It’s nice having everyone in one space.” Chrissy scoffs from the kitchen alcove.

“Chrissy, give us some privacy,” Coleman orders. Chrissy opens her dark-painted mouth to retort, but the whistle of the tea kettle silences her. Coleman looks to her with authority I’ve never been on the receiving end of, and his granddaughter huffs a sigh and stomps off through the door, slamming it behind her. “I swear to magic, that girl. Were you that bad when you were sixteen?”

“I was worse,” I laugh.
