About an hour later, around seven o'clock, I walked up the dirt road toward the school. Mr. Stenseth didn’t live far, just in a small house in Salem, but he thought it would be less suspicious if I walked back by myself. By that time in the evening, the lawn of the campus was empty. A chill went down my spine as I neared the door. I could go in the front and walk past the steps where a man had died just that morning, or I could walk around to the back and look at what I could only imagine was the charred remains of the garden I’d destroyed.

I decided the lesser of two evils would be the front door, if only because it was less of a walk. Even though there was no visible trace of what had happened to Mr. Kilman, I found myself hugging the side of the road and the stairs, avoiding the place where I’d seen him lying.

When I got to the dorm, Eli leaned against his bed, chewing his nails. I’d never noticed before that he bit his nails. As soon as he heard the door open, he looked up and came rushing towards me to throw his arms around my shoulders.

“Dammit, Amber! I’ve never been so worried in my life!”

I hadn’t expected a greeting like that. I hadn’t expected to cry either, but I felt tears welling up in my eyes as I hugged Eli back and leaned against him. The events of this day had left me shocked, terrified, and numb, and I hadn’t allowed myself to process any of that. There, wrapped in a hug from someone I’d known for a week, someone who’d made me feel infinitely more cared for than anyone else had in years, all of those emotions seemed to hit me at one time. I may not have taken the time to even address how traumatic the day had been if it hadn’t been for him taking the time to stop, pull me close, and tell me how scared he was for my safety.

He pulled back just a foot, holding his arms on my shoulders. “Tell me what happened. Mr. Stenseth found me after the fire was out and said you were fine, but I needed to cover for you until you got back. Where were you?”

I wiped the tears from my cheeks and took a deep breath. When I began to speak, my voice trembled. “Um. I started the f-”

A lump swelled in my throat and cut me off. A few more tears slipped out as I watched a look of realization hit Eli. I prepared myself for what was sure to be a loud conversation. I shouldn’t have told him. I should have lied. Eli was going to be livid. He would yell at me. He’d run out and tell everyone what I did. Then they’d accuse me of being involved in Mr. Kilman…

“Amber.” Before the lump cleared, his arms were around me again. “Holy hell, Amber.
