In the absence of a gorgeous assistant, Dev brought on my magic box for the last act. I asked the judges to each choose an item from the room. Jack chose a pen, Oli chose a watch and Agung pointed to a half-eaten Cup Noodle on the windowsill. I told him I couldn’t use it as it was full of soup and bits of noodle and would stain his antique Oriental rug if spilled. He didn’t understand a word of course. I chose an apple for him instead. I slid off the lid, placed the objects inside the box and opened the lid again to show them they had gone. Everyone was amazed. I got five out of five from all three judges – outstanding!

As I went to fist bump Dev, I smelled burning. It was coming from a smouldering pile of newspapers stacked against the wall. I prodded the pile of papers with Agung’s walking stick and flames shot up!
