Olympian Mary Lou Retton, born in Fairmont, West Virginia, brought home the gold, silver, and bronze from the 1984 Olympic Games. She was the first American woman to win a gold medal in the all-around event. A silver medal in the vault and bronze medals in both the floor exercise and uneven bars added up to four individual medals. Her gymnastics team won the silver medal, bringing her total to five. Mary Lou Retton left the Olympics in Los Angeles with more medals than any other athlete. Her winning smile brightened the front of Wheaties cereal boxes and the Associated Press proclaimed her 1984’s “Amateur Athlete of the Year.” Mary Lou Retton was also named “Sportswoman of the Year” by Sports Illustrated in the same year.

Olympic athlete, an all-around O.

Mary Lou Retton sure put on a show.

The smiling gymnast made us stand and cheer.

1984 was certainly her year!
