LYRA

The moment Brett leaves, deafening silence descends between me and Reid. I glance up at him, then shift my eyes away from his pensive form. He makes no move to comfort me. Too absorbed in his thoughts, perhaps?

At least, that’s what I hope.

He pulls at his chin and gazes toward the floor as if he’s parsing through what I’ve told him so far.

Unfortunately, what I’ve explained is merely background to what he needs to understand before I can tell him what really happened.

I’ve touched on just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Things are far worse than what I’ve said so far. I take in a deep breath, blow it out real slow, and wait.

I don’t want to inundate him with information. Reid’s a smart man, one of the few who can keep up with me. In many ways, it feels good to finally get everything off my chest, but it’s like picking at a scab. I’ve accomplished nothing other than exacerbate an already festering wound.

Why didn’t I do what Tex said? I should’ve kept my nose clean. Walked the straight and narrow. I should’ve stopped digging for dirt on people I don’t know.

But it’s too easy, and too much fun.

No shit, Sherlock, and look where it got you?

Reid still doesn’t understand. Hell, I can barely wrap my mind around it, and I’ve spent the better part of the past few days trying to make sense of what’s happening.

As for who wants me dead?

I told Reid and Brett a lot about the internet—the keys, DNS, and all of that—but I’ve yet to get around to the true horror I uncovered.

“Who’s Sybil?” I can’t help but pry.

I shouldn’t. Brett’s personal life is his own, but I’m curious by nature.

“Sybil is a woman he was assigned to protect.” Reid tugs at his ear and cocks his head as he looks at me.

“Her Protector?”

Now this is interesting. Evidently, getting romantically involved with your Protector isn’t against Guardian HRS rules. I file this yummy fact away immediately.

“He was.” Reid’s reply rolls back at me filled with caution.

Was? Past tense. Maybe it is frowned upon? The corners of my lips turn down.

“And now?” My brows pinch together.

“They’re engaged.”

“Oh …” I let my voice trail off as I process what that means.

“How are you feeling?” Ever the considerate one, it sounds as if he’s really concerned about me.

“To be honest, I’m exhausted.” My attempt to block out the past twenty-four hours isn’t working.

Images of Bert’s severed cock lying in a congealing puddle of blood and the way blood spurted out of Joe’s neck like a geyser spraying all over the walls and ceiling keep flickering through my mind.

At least they never got around to raping me.

I focus on the silver lining. The rest is too horrifying.

“You’ve had a lot happen in a very short span of time.” The smooth cadence of Reid’s voice is like a warm blanket wrapping around me. “What those men did to you, what they tried to do …” He cups my cheek and stares down at me with those magnificent eyes.
