With the message delivered, Lyra sped back to the village. Exhaustion pulled her down. She shook her head and focused on the trees. She needed to be back when the drove was successful. Her future depended on being at the village.

Something ahead caught her gaze, and the speedbike beeped in alarm. She screeched to a stop, barely missing a person on the trail. Her heart thundered so loudly she didn't hear the crash of the bike hitting a bush.

Kalli stepped out of the bushes. Blood covered her side and turned her gray hair purple. For a moment, Lyra thought her speedbike had hit Kalli. But the way her tattered shirt hung said she was attacked by an animal.

Lyra jumped off of the speedbike. "What happened?"

"A second dragon showed up." Kalli's face twisted in pain.

Lyra reeled back, suddenly dizzy. A second dragon meant the drove had faced a dragon in its cave. Nausea churned in her stomach. "The drove?"

"No word." Kalli laid her hand on Lyra's arm. "I'm sure they are fine. I saw some of the training you did. The drove is strong."

Lyra took a deep breath. She had to believe the drove was fine. Right now her village needed her. "I can help you get to the village," Lyra said.

Kalli shook her head. "There are more seriously wounded you can bring back."

"Where are they?"

"By Holy Lake," Kalli said. "Go. I will be fine."

Lyra leapt into the speedbike and headed to Holy Lake. She didn't dare go too fast, because she might not be able to spot a person in time to avoid hitting them.

The ride didn't take long before Holy Lake came into view. She slammed on the brakes at the sight. The blood-splattered trail hadn't been what had stopped her, but more so the disturbed surface of the lake. The lake's water was not only a blood red, but the water churned. White caps broke the surface. In all of her years, she had never seen anything like it. The lake almost seemed angry.

Lyra jumped out. Braunvieh and Farah stood by a group of people.

She ran to them. "What can I do to help? I have a speedbike."

Farah's face changed. "There were two of them. If you had been with the drove, you would be dead." She wrapped Lyra in a hug and sobbed.

"Are they dead?" Lyra gazed at Braunvieh, seeking answers.

Braunvieh sighed. "I'm sure they are fine. The drove is strong."

Lyra nodded and gave Farah a squeeze. "I can help."

"Can you ferry the most wounded to the healer?" Braunvieh asked.

"I can do that."

Lyra spent all day transporting the rest of the distraction crews’ members out of the woods.

That night, she tried to sleep, but her mind whirled with unanswered questions. How could there be two dragons? Since her mother's death, the clan was more careful about approaching nests. Where were Jacob and her drove?

There had been no word from the drove.
