Inside he is reassured. A bar is a bar, and this is not so different from Barcelona: smoke and conversation. Pascual makes his way down a long narrow room, attracting little notice. He orders a beer and leans on the bar, facing the door. With a cigarette going he eavesdrops, monitoring the late-afternoon concerns of a comfortable provincial middle class. Sex, football, money, sex. As the beer goes down Pascualâs tension eases, and then Katixa walks in.
He manages not to betray himself as they make eye contact; she is splendid again, today in tight black jeans and the leather jacket, hair flying free, a carryall over her shoulder. Pascual turns to his beer so as not to stare and listens as she pushes through the crowd and asks for cigarettes in unapologetic Castilian. The barman turns to the shelf; if Katixa is attracting notice it is for her looks. Pascual remembers with a start that the plan calls for him to leave first and he sets the beer down and shoves off.
Outside darkness has fallen but the population of the square has grown. Lights are on and children are milling and shouting. There is a nasty damp wind and Pascual turns up his collar and makes for the street that leads down to the station. He pauses to light another cigarette and let Katixa catch up, resisting the urge to look for her. The walk is much easier downhill. He gets into the car and waits.
He sees her in the mirror and leans to open the door for her. Pascual preempts any greetings by grasping the back of her neck and pulling her to him; he has been waiting for this kiss. It is long and healing. âMy love. How are you?â
âTired. Iâve covered a lot of ground in twenty-four hours.â
