Chapter Seven

Once they dressed and Justin tossed their dirty dishes in the sink, they headed back to town.

“So what happened?” They’d rushed her out so fast, she hadn’t had time to ask. Maybe someone had captured Snake.

“That was Detective Chris Mancy from the Bozeman PD on the phone. He called about the Tony Deluza trial. Seems Destiny Jones will be arriving in town to testify against Deluza, and the detective asked if we could provide the protection since she’s from here.”

Lydia had heard of that name. “Wasn’t he the guy who killed his bookie?”

“I’m afraid so. Destiny was at the wrong place at the wrong time and witnessed the whole thing. Deluza saw her and tried to shut her up.”

“I can’t imagine the terror. It’s bad enough that Snake hates me. If I’d seen him kill someone, I’m sure he’d find me, bodyguards or not.”

Tom reached from the backseat and placed a hand on her shoulder. “Don’t worry. You’re safe with us.”

“I might be, but poor Destiny, what she’s gone through.”

Justin turned onto the main road leading into town. “Once she testifies, she’ll be safe. That scumbag will be found guilty, and Destiny can come back home.”

“Is Tom going to be her bodyguard until the trial’s over?” She prayed not. Destiny was cute, young, and single.

“Yes.”

Damn. His job would be to protect Destiny, a deserving woman, but Lydia didn’t like that he’d have to be by the woman’s side day after day. She hadn’t seen the woman in over a year and a half. If she remembered right, she used to teach first grade. “How long will you be gone?” She didn’t want to whine. Tom didn’t belong to her.

“Won’t know until I get there.”

Yes, they’d had amazing sex, but she knew from experience that sex alone did not keep a man around for long. She thought they had a connection, but now she wondered if it had been wishful thinking.

Back at the station, Tom gathered a few files and left, giving her a brief kiss. It was almost as if he’d dismissed her and was moving on to sexy Destiny. The euphoria she’d experienced an hour before was gone. Depression edged its way under her skin.

Justin said he, too, needed to do his rounds.

She didn’t want to be left out. “I’m going to see if Luke can use me at work. With Ed and Harold out of the way, I think I’ll be safe.”

“Promise me if either of your bosses are gone, you’ll come right back.”

That made sense. “Sure.”

While she wasn’t really in the mood to be perky and serve customers, it was a lot better than sitting on a bed in a room where she’d held Tom. After donning her uniform, she went next door to work.

One of her bosses was behind the bar. “Are you sure you’re okay?”

“I’m fine. Harold and Ed are locked up and no one’s seen Snake. Besides, I need the money.”

For the next two hours, she kept busy chatting with the customers and giving them the best service she knew how.
