Chapter 9

Jag called while Lyall drove the short distance to Aria’s place. He could have walked, and he had plenty of times over the course of their brief relationship. But this time, he wanted to get there and back as quickly as possible.

“Any news?” Lyall asked when he pressed the green button on his dash. It was a dumb question; Jag said he’d call when he had news. But Lyall figured he could be forgiven. He had a lot on his plate at the moment. Namely, keeping Natalia safe and out of his bed. Both were pretty damn taxing tasks.

“We’ve identified the owner of the cell phone. And we know he’s human. A kid, still in high school. We’re trying to track him down now. I’d normally assume the rest were human, too, but you swear you saw one of them in wolf form.”

“I didn’t, Natalia did,” Lyall corrected him.

“Is she 100 percent sure? I mean, there are some pretty big wolves in this area that aren’t shifters. And with her family history…”

“Okay, first of all, she said the wolf’s eyes glowed, and last time I fact-checked, regular wolf eyes don’t glow. And second, what the fuck are you implying about her family history?”

“I’m not implying anything. I’m stating a fact. Her mother was crazy. That shit can be hereditary.”

“You think Natalia is going crazy?” All he needed was for this rumor to start spreading. Natalia was already half-convinced of it herself; she didn’t need wolves from his own goddamn pack suggesting it as well. If he didn’t figure out a way to convince her she wasn’t like her mother, he stood zero chance of keeping her around. And if he let her leave this time, she wasn’t coming back. Ever again.

“Look, man, I’m just checking all possibilities. I’ve always liked Natalia, and I had huge respect for her aunt. But I also remember her mother. The woman saw shit that wasn’t there all the damn time.”

Lyall rubbed his hand over his face and ground his teeth. Jag was right; Nat’s mother had hallucinated, and it got worse toward the end, to the point where she walked around town alone having full blown conversations.

“Natalia saw a wolf,” Lyall repeated. “And it had glowing eyes.”

“If that’s true, we’re dealing with a shifter-human team. Not completely out of the realm of possibility but definitely unusual. And screws with any theories we had about intent. Humans would mess with her because she’s a witch. But why the hell would a wolf mess with her? And why pull humans into whatever fucked up game they’re playing?”

“I thought those were the questions you’re supposed to answer.”

“Hey, no need to get testy. We’re trying.”

“You just suggested my—Natalia—might be fucking crazy, with no basis other than her mother’s actions. I think that’s grounds for getting testy.”

“Man, I get that you slept with her on and off for like two decades, but you never mated. There’s a reason for that, you know.”

Yes, but it wasn’t what Jag was implying, and Lyall wasn’t in the mood to try to explain—or justify himself.
