The RÃ¥r

They found a small cave on the side of the mountain and decided to shelter there for the night. It wasn’t even suppertime, but it was too dark to travel safely through unfamiliar icy terrain, even with the aid of Søren’s ball of light.

“Hopefully a rå decides to say hello. There’s probably at least one nearby.” Søren added another small piece of wood to the fire; it hissed and popped as the ice melted and met the flames. He winced. “Oops, should have dried that one out first.”

Calix squatted across from her, organizing a bit of food for everyone. Luxe snuggled up against Alistair as they sat as close to the fire as they dared. “If their purpose is to guard their places in nature, why would they leave to fight with us?” This was a question that had been bothering her.

Søren shrugged. “Maybe they won’t. But the Anjana are nature fae who rarely leave their forest, and they committed to our cause.”

“Fair enough.” Luxe chewed at her bottom lip, feeling nervous about convincing yet another type of fae that the queen should be stopped.

A voice sounded from beyond their small ring of light at the mouth of the cave. “The rå who guards this mountain is not nearby tonight. Also, you might still try the Jinn. The queen wasn’t convinced of their loyalty despite the rewards—and punishments—she promised.”

Luxe and the guys were all on their feet before the owner of the voice walked into the light. Saoirse.

Luxe released her held breath. “Goddess, do you have to keep doing that?”

“No, but it’s amusing.” Saoirse smirked. “It’s not my fault you’re not paying attention to your surroundings.”

“How did you even find us?” Luxe settled back down in her spot, still annoyed. Alistair sat down next to her once more, but on her other side, placing himself between her and the assassin; she noticed he looked no less annoyed than she felt.

“I’ve been tracking you since shortly after your encounter with the Sabawaelnu. One of them got a message to the queen about your presence. Fortunately, the queen and her soldiers don’t know about the hunter’s shack, and the sea fae had no way of knowing where you went when you left.” Saoirse eased to the ground, tucking her black cloak under her to protect from the pebbles and rocks on the floor of the cave. “You were lucky; the queen sent her minions the other way up the coast, as there is a town in that direction.”

“Why were you there?” Søren sounded suspicious.

“I overheard the queen giving orders, so I went as well, although without her knowledge. Of course, I checked the hut. It was a simple matter to listen to your plans and follow you here. I was waiting for dark, though, before I approached.” She gave them a shrewd look. “I know how to be inconspicuous, invisible—something you need to work on, by the way.”

“Noted.” Luxe met the female’s gaze. “Why did you come?”

Saoirse gave a half shrug. “You did tell me you wanted to speak with me about something.
