SEVENTEEN

I knew something was wrong the moment we turned down the long driveway to the Le Torneau mansion. There was debris on the drive, and when I rolled to a stop, we discovered that debris was from the front doors, which looked like they’d been pulled from their hinges.

“Shit!” I said, jumping out of the car.

“Careful, Mars,” Annie said, sliding across the front seat and following me out. “Let me go first.”

I couldn’t process her statement. The idea of allowing a one-hundred-ten-pound girl to lead me toward danger was not something I was about to do.

“Isador,” I called, rushing into the house.

The foyer was absolute chaos. The elegant Egyptian rug was pushed off to the side and a table lay on its side. Opposite the table, a ceramic umbrella stand had been shattered, although oddly, the umbrellas still stood. The mess did nothing to calm my nerves.

Annie followed, her face flush with concern. “I’ll check upstairs.

You look down here,” she said.

“Do it,” I said and raced into the house, running from room to room. The mess continued through the house, with chairs and bookshelves tipped over, the contents of which had been strewn about and broken. I started to build an image of someone being unwillingly dragged through the house.

“Astrid!” I raced into the kitchen, still finding no one, although there was a cup of tea sitting on the counter, like someone expected to come back and finish it. I dipped my finger into the cup. The tea was cold.

I completed my circuit through the first floor, not finding anything besides further evidence of a significant struggle. In Isador’s office, I discovered a single high-heeled shoe caught in a furnace grate. I struggled to free it, and upon inspection, I discovered that the front strap on the shoe had been broken, leaving behind a small scrape of skin and a few drops of blood. Whoever had removed the wearer from the shoe had done so with force.
