CHAPTER XIX

I remained hopeful for the next ten minutes. I thought Kron would come back for me, even though, deep down, I wanted him to make it out with Kate and the other girls. I didn’t want them risking everything to save me, even though I desperately wanted to get out to see my women and my kids again.

I tried bashing the door. I tried swinging my sword into it, over and over. I was able to make a few small dents, but not nearly enough to come close to breaking it down.

I was doomed.

I sat down on the edge of that strange alien bed, and then, after a minute, I fell back, dropping my sword next to me. I took a deep breath in and shook my head. The exhaustion quickly crept back up on me, clutching every muscle in my body. “At least I tried,” I mumbled to myself. I was so tired that I was tempted to doze off, but I knew they would come for me as soon as I was asleep. They weren’t going to let me get away this time, and there was no way I could just sit there, awake with my sword, thinking I could rush them when they opened that door for me.

I tried not to cry. I probably would have cried had I not been so exhausted. I was quickly losing hope. Now, I was destined to spend eternity in that cold, dark cell. Maybe I should have complied. Maybe life would have been better in that mock-bedroom, fucking random aliens every day in exchange for a comfy bed and good food.

I nearly dozed off again, but I caught myself. Suddenly, the power flicked on. The light in that bedroom nearly blinded me. I winced my face away and gave my eyes a moment to adjust.

If the lights were on, that meant the cameras, wherever they were hidden, were probably back up and running, which meant that they could now see me. Any moment now, they would be coming for me. I needed to stand up and prepare myself for my last stand. Maybe I would get lucky and I would manage to hack and slash my way out… but it seemed unlikely.

They weren’t the smartest creatures, but they weren’t complete morons. I knew that they were going to try to starve me out. They had me captured and they knew it. They could wait for me to let my guard down.

I thought about putting on an act: pretending to sleep and then striking when they came in for me, but it seemed hard to believe that they would fall for that. I strained to sit up. The aches in my body were intense now.

I stumbled up to my feet and then nearly fell down. I had no energy left. There was no way I would be able to fight. I fell suddenly to my knees. My body needed to rest… Or, I should say, my soul needed to rest. My body was fine.
