CHAPTER XV

I did my test alone in that school classroom. The teacher was wearing colorful beach shorts and a Hawaiian T-shirt. Next to his desk was a beach bag with a change of clothes and a towel. He must have checked the time on his phone every five minutes throughout that long three-hour examination. I’ll admit that I felt a bit bad for him—and a bit guilty, because it was one of the nicest days of the summer, and he was there voluntarily. “You don’t have to use the entire amount of time,” he said to me after just one hour.

I usually did use every available minute. I usually needed every little leg up that I could get. But when he told me that I didn’t have to use all three hours after just one hour, I was already nearing completion. I was shocked to see that I only had two pages left, and the questions were… easy.

For once, I felt like I remembered all of the pertinent lessons. I remembered the formulas. I didn’t even have to refer to my formula sheet after the first five minutes of the exam; they just… stayed in my head. And when it came to the theoretical section of that physics exam, I found myself constructing wonderful paragraphs, managing to explain all of the relevant theories and how they applied to each question.

Even the teacher was surprised when I walked up and handed him the test. He looked down at it and then he looked into my eyes. “Do you need help?” he said.

“No. I’m done,” I said.

“Done? The whole thing?”

I nodded my head. He looked at me for a long moment and then he looked down at the exam. He picked it up carefully and flipped it open, reading through my answers. I stood there for a few minutes, watching as his eyes narrowed into what was an undoubtedly suspicious look. “Kyrie…” he said. “We need to talk.”

“Talk about what?”

“Just wait there,” he said. He went over to the phone, dialed a local number, waited a moment, and then he returned to his desk. “Take a seat.” So I sat back behind my desk, trying to wrap my head around what I’d done wrong.

I was starting to think that I’d gotten every answer wrong, and now they were going to give me a lecture about wasting everyone’s time. The principal of the school came in, also dressed for the beach. He walked over and spoke quietly with my physics teacher. Then he thumbed through my test, grunted, and stepped over to me. “Explain yourself, Kyrie Aaron.”

“What?”

“Just come clean, son.”

“Come clean about what?”

He stared at me for a long moment before turning to look at the teacher. “Did one of your friends give you the answers?”

“No. Did I get a good grade?”

“You didn’t get a good grade,” my teacher said from behind the plump principal. “You got every single question right. Even Hannah Stockner didn’t get every question right.”

I caught myself grinning. “I guess I just studied the right stuff.
