LUKE

As much as I enjoyed what we had going on, I always prepared myself for each time to be the last time. It had to be anytime now that she’d say the magic words.

My debts are paid.

It’s going to be any day now, I’m sure of it. Despite countless nights at that worn down motel, I knew I couldn’t let my hopes get higher anymore. As much as I wanted Zelene, I didn’t think I could handle losing another person I truly cared for.

If only she knew how much she already had me wrapped around her finger. Who was I kidding? Whatever she decided to do, I knew I would follow her without a second thought. I knew right at the beginning of this stupid agreement, I’d end up less happy than I was to begin with.

I came outside to shove my axe through something in hopes that it would distract me even for a moment. Even now, this wasn’t enough to keep her from drowning me in her presence. I was a dead man walking whenever it came to Zelene.

Gripping the axe, I sucked in enough air to fill my lungs before bringing the blade down. Hearing the wood crack under the force, I felt a slight relief fill me.

Zelene was still a mystery to me. She loved baking and decided to move out to this town to follow her dreams. That was all I really knew of her. There were so many things I could do to easily mess everything up just because I didn’t know everything about her. I felt like I was walking on a tightrope just by trying to do everything right.

Cutting down trees and making furniture out of them, now that was something I knew like the back of my hand. Whenever I felt like I couldn’t breathe, this was the activity I turned to in order to calm myself.

I wanted to be able to feel this way when it came to Zelene. This offer I made her… I just managed to make everything worse. Even after these few weeks, I still beat myself up for not just asking her just to go on a simple date. At least then I could have learned something about her.

Now, once she was finished making ends meet, I was sure she wouldn’t need me ever again. While I’d suffer without her, she’d be able to go on without a single glance back. That phone call she took, she promised the person on the other end that she’d have all the money within a month. Three weeks had passed since then, time was running thin.

Striking the wood again, my brows furrowed together.

What if it wasn't too late? Could I tell her how I felt? After all this time, would she actually be revolted at the idea of being something more than a never ending deal? I didn't know how she would react if I actually went through with it.

How would she feel if she found out how much she managed to drive me crazy by just simply looking my way.
