Chapter 26

Having had his bonds severed by the glowing purple claws of his disturbingly faithful hellcat ZoMonsterz, Chauncy found his purple wizard’s robe – and the special underwear Valtora had forced him to wear on their trip – on the floor. He put it on – after trying in vain to pull Tip off.

“Keep trying,” Tip urged during the attempt. Chauncy ignored his newly sentient member, knowing full well that Tip was interested in one thing and one thing only. Something that involved getting off, but not from Chauncy’s body. So Chauncy pulled on his robe instead.

Thusly dressed, Chauncy checked his pockets, and to his relief, he found his belongings still within. The Magic of Magic on his left, and the Sunstone on his right.

“Okay,” he declared, eyeing ZoMonsterz, who was sitting on the floor at his side. “Zella could be anywhere,” he warned. “And without my staff, I won’t be able to beat her.”

ZoMonsterz just gazed up at him lovingly, seeming unconcerned by this fact.

“If she recaptures me, I want you to run,” he told her, struck by a sudden burst of heroic self-sacrificial sentiment. “Then find Valtora and tell her where I am.”

“Reeowr,” ZoMonsterz replied, whether in agreement or not, he hadn’t a clue.

“Mffmm mmfff,” he heard a muffled voice declare from the front of his pants. He frowned, lifting his robe a bit from his…bits.

“Say again?” he asked.

“If she captures you again, I’ll distract her,” Tip offered. “At least until Valtora rescues us.”

“Um…okay,” Chauncy replied.

“That way she won’t kill us,” Tip added. “It’ll be hard work, but I’m up for it.”

Chauncy ignored the demon-head, letting his robe fall back into place to muffle the guy. He strode across the room to the door, twisting the knob open. He cracked the door open, peering out…and saw a sliver of hallway beyond, with a skull-embedded wall similar to the ceiling of his room. He glanced down at ZoMonsterz…who darted out of the room, vanishing beyond.

“Hey!” he whisper-yelled. But she didn’t come back. He sighed, screwing up his courage, then opening the door a bit further and poking his head through. He saw a long hallway beyond, flanked by walls of skulls similar to the bedroom ceiling. The ceiling and floor were made of depressing stone, the precise hue of moldy tombstones.

And ZoMonsterz trotted right down the hallway, toward a stairwell leading upward a good forty feet ahead.

Chauncy eyed the two walls, but to his relief, there were no doors that might open up suddenly and scare the daylights out of him. And there was no daylight, for the only illumination was from skull-lanterns bolted to the walls at regular intervals. This cast the hallway in an extra-spooky light, shadows flickering menacingly.

“Wait!” he hissed at ZoMonsterz, hurrying behind her. The floor was awfully cold, which made him realize he didn’t have shoes or boots. So he padded down the creepy hallway, catching up with ZoMonsterz right as she reached the bottom of the stairs. She stopped there, glancing back at him with her unusual eyes.
