After our latest phone meeting, I was so happy I called Matt to tell him I was back in business. He sounded a little befuddled, but he graciously congratulated me. As soon as those pleasantries were over, I said, “Matt, I’ve been thinking. You know how to get a hold of Nina. I want to talk to her. Just to straighten things out between us. We were friends once. So, you wanna give me her number?”

Actually, I wanted to brag to her about my new potential gig. Maybe it would remind her of my star power and why she’d liked me in the first place. See what she was missing out on by betraying me.

“Um, no, Meredith,” Matt said. “Number one, I can’t reveal a source.”

“But she’s not a source,” I said.

“I can’t discuss this with you, Meredith.”

“Why not?” I said.

“As your friend,” he said, “off the record, leave it alone. You don’t understand what you’re dealing with. She knows your vulnerabilities. She’s not afraid to break you.”

“I’m not your friend,” I said. And I hung up the phone.

I called him back an hour later, but he didn’t pick up. I left a message:

“Sorry about earlier. I’m on the rag.”
