Chapter 10
Catrina sat at one end of a large leather sectional, reading her tablet when we entered the room. When she heard us, she smiled and stood up to greet us.
âCan you check the boys arenât winding Bernie up out there?â she asked, and I knew that was code for âbugger off, Jamie, I want a word with her on her ownâ.
Watching her brother grin as he took the hint, we waited until he stepped out onto the patio before she came closer and wrapped her arms around me in a hug.
âOh,â I said, startled by her sudden show of affection. She held me tighter than Iâd normally have liked, and her enthusiasm confused the heck out of me.
Breaking the embrace she gestured for me to take a seat, and when she sat facing me, there were tears in her eyes. âWhat can I say?â she began, holding her hands palms up. âI suppose I should thank you.â
âI donât understand,â I replied, confused.
She chuckled. âSince he came back from the recording session, Iâve noticed a difference in him. He enjoys doing what he does, but heâs the happiest heâs been in years. Heâs usually horrible at keeping in touch, but these last few weeks, heâs called nearly every day and all he wants to talk about is you. Seeing the way he looks at you,â she popped one shoulder up, âI can see youâre exactly what he needs.â
âThanks,â I replied, both relieved and excited that she didnât call me a delusional gold digger or anything. âItâs early days really ⦠well, since March, but with him being away, we havenât had the time to really get to know what itâs like for him to come and go for work and me to run my pub on the other side of the Atlantic.â
Catrina frowned. âI get that he must have left you feeling abandoned, but Paddy told me he was convinced youâd forgive Jamie for that once you heard some of the songs he wrote about you. The guys think that material will take their band to yet another level. Iâve heard a couple of those numbers and Iâd have to agree. They donât leave much room to question how my brother feels about you.â She snickered. âFrankly, I thought if you didnât match up to my expectations after hearing them, Iâm not sure what Iâd have done.â
I felt a little embarrassed with Catrinaâs opinion, but I hadnât realized how much I had needed someone close to her brother to confirm how Jamie felt about me. It convinced me that Jamie wasnât just with me for fun, no matter how ridiculously surreal my situation had felt.
âIt was his idea to bring you over for Thanksgiving. He thought it may be a good way for Bernie and I to help you understand the life that could lie ahead of you.â
âOur work commitments worry me,â I began, âThe way I see it, thereâs always going to be something that comes before our relationship.
