Hell hath no fury like an angry belle
* * *
âWhy would you even do that?â Ever hissed. She didn't want her voice to carry. She had jumped up from Sunday brunch and abandoned Virginia with the boys when sheâd heard the heavy knocking at the door.
So she stood on the dead grass between the gravel drive and the house, wondering how many and which of her neighbors were watching what had to be a fight. She couldnât take it inside though. Ever couldnât do this in front of Virginia and the boys.
âWhat do you mean?â He seemed thoroughly confused and mad at the same time.
Well, she was mad, too. Jaxâs last little cluster of texts had been a mess. Heâd asked if she even worked at Gladiolas. Heâd said since the place was closed, she must already be home. Then he messaged he was on his way there to find her.
That was the first time Ever texted back. Sheâd been frantic to stop him. The last thing Virginia and the boys needed was an upset Jackson Mayfair showing up at two a.m. on a Sunday morning wondering where she was. She'd written back and said, âI AM at work. Thus Iâm BUSY. Please don't bother me. And don't go to the house.â
It was harsh and rude, but she was panicking. And sheâd been quietly panicking ever since. Heâd not messaged her again and sheâd not reached out either, telling herself she had plans for the day and sheâd take care of Jackson Mayfair later.
Then her brunch was interrupted. Heâd parked his squad carâof all things!âin front of her home and knocked on her door in full uniform. He was on shift apparently, but that didnât stop him. It appeared Jackson Mayfair was going to take care of it now.
âIt was closed, Ever. You weren't there.â He said it like an accusation.
She yelled back, shifting topics just enough. The lies rolling a little too easily as she bit off each word. âIâm a server! Why would you go there? Did you want me to wait on your table so you could leave me a nice tip?â
He tipped his head and glared at her as if to say, you know that's not why.
âThen what? You wanted to show your friends your waitress girlfriend?â She was waving her hands, gesturing wildly. Fear bubbled out of her feeling like anger. âYou want to interrupt my work so that you can say hi?â
âThatâs not what it was, Ever!â
âThen what was it?â She planted her fists on her hips, feet wide as she stared him down. She didn't give him time to answer. Whether that was because she was upset or because she was consciously cutting him off to make sure he couldn't win this or even ask her anything that she couldn't or wouldn't answer, she didnât know. She just felt a need to make sure he didnât get a word in. âJackson, first you interrupted my work last night, now you're interrupting my Sunday brunch.
