- WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 1924 -

Frankie and Levi exchanged looks.

“Why would you say that I’m a descendant?”

“Well, the resemblance is the biggest indicator.” Anna reached for her teacup and held it, but didn’t take a sip. “Our family is quite small, so I feel as though I’ve met everyone on both mine and my husband’s side. Then there’s the fact that you seemed to be familiar with this house. Don’t think I didn’t notice the way you studied everything as you walked in.”

Frankie kicked himself for being so transparent. Then again, this was personal for him. It hit home in a way that nothing else ever had before.

“And then there was the fact that you were watching the house earlier this morning,” Anna finished. “At first I thought maybe you wanted to do me harm, so I cast a protection spell after you left. The fact that you’re sitting here now and haven’t been incinerated into flames is a good indicator that you can be trusted.”

Levi leaned toward Frankie. “She doesn’t mess around.”

Frankie ignored him. “I was only watching this house so I could warn you about Lady Luck.”

“Is that so? Because the look on your eye when you saw her leave this morning seemed to me like surprise, not concern.” Anna took a sip. “And if you truly came here this morning to warn me about Lady Luck, then why wouldn’t you have knocked on my door right after she left? Instead, you made a second venture out of the city to see me.”

Levi shifted uncomfortably beside Frankie. Neither of them had any explanation for the way Anna had just called them out like that.

She casually took another sip of her tea. “What time period are you from?”

Frankie took a deep breath, ready to divulge his secret, but Levi spoke up before he could.

“That’s not really necessary, is it?” he asked.

“It’s okay,” Frankie told him. “She has a right to know.” He looked back to Anna. “I’m from 1984.”

She nodded. “Sixty years from now. So that would make you…my grandson?”

Frankie nodded.

“That would explain the resemblance, then.”

“That’s all I can tell you, though,” Frankie said. “I can’t reveal too much, or I could risk altering my future.”

“Yes, that would be unfortunate,” she murmured, lost in thought.

“I only came here to warn you about Lady Luck. That part is true. Do you realize what you’ve signed up for? The fate that you’ve subjected yourself to?” He realized his words sounded accusatory, so he added, “She can be manipulative.”

Anna retook her seat and stared blankly at the floor. “I know she can. And I know what she does, and how she gets payment. But I had no other choice.”

“We’ve discovered that Lady Luck has been using her power to kill people,” Levi said, matching Anna’s soft tone. “We don’t want to see that happen to you.”

This caught her attention. “No. She’s not killing them. She’s only making deals with them.”

“And when the deal is over, people die,” Frankie said. “Look at Charles Bennett.
