Chapter Nine
Iâd reread that passage a dozen times in the last two weeks as November trudged along, the weather getting steadily chillier outside. I sat in my dorm room alone. Siobhan had headed out early, saying something about needing to get in some extra studying. I stared at the book in my lap and reached for my phone, hitting the first number on my Favorites contact list. The line rang twice before I heard the muffled static of someone answering on the other end of the line.
âMae Lin is everything okay?â my father said.
âIâm fine, bà bÄ,â I answered.
âItâs just that you donât usually call,â he noted.
âI just wanted to check in and see how everything was going at the restaurant without me.â I wasnât ready to ask him the question that had been on my mind for days.
âOh, weâre doing fine. Still isnât the same without you, but everything here is fine. How about you? Are you enjoying your classes this year?â
âYes, they are fascinating.â Time to broach the topic that might just explain why Bashir and I are linked. âI know I was surprised when Nai-Nai passed her power on to me, but did she ever talk about it with you? Or any magic?â
âWhen I was younger, she told me that we came from great power, but that we had to work hard to earn what was due us. Why are you asking?â
âSo, she never mentioned Djinn or Leprechauns or anything like that?â
There was a pause and then he said, âNot that I can remember. Whatâs this about?â
âNothing important. Just curious I suppose. I hear my classmates talk about how their magic has always been so open and shared. It got me wondering why ours was so guarded.â
âI wish I had answers for you,â he said.
âItâs okay.â I heard voices in the background. âYou sound busy. I should let you go. I love you.â
âI love you, too, sweetheart.â
Gathering my bag, I headed down to the third floor and found the Wisher classroom empty save for Ahn who sat staring intently at a piece of blank paper. I sat down beside her, but didnât break her concentration. Finally, she blinked and turned to face me.
âOh, hi.â She gave me a wide grin.
âWhat were you doing?â
âTrying to see if I could force a fortune at random. I know it sounds stupid, but you never know. It always feels like the Djinn and Leprechauns have so much more control over their powers.â
She wasnât wrong. âI feel that way, too. It always seems like ours is the more passive power.â
I settled into the seat beside her and the Wish Granting for Beginners: Djinn Edition book slid out of my bag onto the floor. Ahn spotted it and let out a sigh.
âStill havenât figured out what it all means?â
âWhat?â I hadnât shared the secret about Bashir with her.
âAbout how weâre linked. I canât explain why, but I got this feeling like there was Djinn magic involved somehow. Thatâs why you got the book, right?â
I swallowed the lump in my throat.
