What’s in a Name?

Many people are surprised that I did not change Buster’s name. His previous owners had all called him Buster. At first glance, he didn’t look anything like a Buster. And frankly, I wasn’t crazy about the name. I had the feeling that someone had labeled him “Buster” because they didn’t plan on keeping him and therefore didn’t give much thought to what his permanent name should be.

Buster is a purebred papillon, and a lot of creative effort goes into the official AKC® name of a registered dog. The name of the kennel is usually included (but not always), and there are a limited number of letters allowed on the registration form, so the name is often creatively spelled in order to fit the space allowed. But Buster was not registered until he came to live with me. Someone had simply started calling him Buster and it stuck.

I worried for days about whether to change his name or not. In the end, I decided that Buster had undergone way too much change in his short life. For that reason I continued to call him Buster. In my opinion, the name itself didn’t matter nearly as much as the manner in which it was spoken. So I used Buster and Busterbrown as terms of endearment. I made up songs about Buster and sang to him. I made Buster a happy loving sound. My friends gave me a license plate holder that says “Buster’s Mom,” and I immediately put it on my car. In the end, Buster turned out to be the perfect name.
