Chapter 12

OH NO... IT’S HIM.

“Graham?” My voice was barely a whisper. I wasn’t sure if he heard me, then he stilled.

I’d wanted to avoid seeing Matlock because it hurt too much, and I felt like such a blasted fool for even coming here in the first place, but now I was trapped and had no way out. I should have known I would get caught. I should have known that this was going to happen. Who did I think I was, trying to see Matlock at his own engagement party? Was I really that stupid?

Maybe it’s pregnancy brain, a voice in my head pointed out. I’ve heard that renders even the brightest women stupid.

Magic tickled my fingers as though to remind me it was there in case I needed to use it. As much as I appreciated the sentiment, the last thing I needed to do was use magic on a junior Council member. I didn’t want anyone discovering my and Matlock’s previous relationship, although, based on what Charity said, it seemed that they were aware of it even if they hadn’t taken action.

I was through. This time, I was sure of it. I did feel guilty, of course. Part of me was so sure that Matlock had a right to know about our child, about the small family we had created together, but then I remembered his eyes as he broke up with me. I remembered how cold and unflinching he was. Why had I even bothered to come? Why would I put myself at such risk?

I didn’t want to involve myself any further with the Council, with Matlock, with any of it. And after Alison’s offer of finding someone who could help us so she wouldn’t be at risk, I had a lot to think about.

“Genevieve Melfi,” Graham said, his voice a slice into my skin. “How interesting to run into you only a street away from Matlock’s engagement party. What risk you’ve taken coming here. And now you’ve gone and gotten yourself caught.” He sneered. “Stupid wench.”

I swallowed, glancing past Graham to the other side. A bird flew past but didn’t even turn his head to look at me. Why would he? There were people there, but they didn’t notice us. I could hear laughter and subtle conversation coming from the surrounding houses. Had Graham conducted some sort of invisibility spell so no one would see the two of us down here? If I screamed, would Matlock recognize my voice and come for me, or would he ignore me? Would he pretend he was not aware of what was happening? If Graham had done such a thing, why? What were his plans for me??

No way, I thought. There’s no way Graham is that stupid.

Maybe if I deserved it. Maybe if there was actual evidence of the affair Matlock and I had – like the child growing inside of me, and Graham knew about it – then maybe.

But no one knew about that.

No one except Alison. And I knew Alison would never betray me.
