A few days after Fern ambushed me in the garden with Livy, I had somewhat gotten over my shock. I was used to Livy with shorter hair now, so I wasn’t struck dumb whenever I saw her. And Livy's not-quite-shy smiles whenever she saw me were teasing me into the idea that it might be alright that I was crushing on her.

Jessa's knowing raised eyebrow, though, that was making me a little self-conscious. Which she knew.

Making the trip halfway to town to trade veggies at the greenhouses was both a needed task and an escape from them both for the better part of the day. I had gladly taken the opportunity to clear my head.

As an added bonus, I'd also gotten some gossip about Major Grosman and the militia. It seemed that they had mostly given up on their search for Livy, though I was told there were still a few scattered fliers on notice boards in town. I hadn't realized just how worried I had still been about that until I'd found out I didn't need to worry anymore. I'd tell everyone else at dinner tonight.

Back from my trip, I walked into the kitchen, set my bags down on the table, and sort of paused. I had bumped into Antony on the way inside, and he had cheerfully informed me that Jessa and Livy had made the best sandwiches for lunch. Since I had taken off to visit the neighbor with the greenhouses first thing in the morning to trade cucumbers and squash—the cucumber and squash plants were making a bid for world domination this year for some reason, and we had tons—for lettuce and whatever else that wouldn't be able to grow again until it started cooling down once more, I had missed lunch. So now, I was out an awesome sandwich and had to figure out what to do for just me.

"Hi!" Livy chirped behind me.

I jumped and spun around. "Holy shit!" I gasped, hands to my chest in a classic damsel pose.

Livy grinned. "Sorry?"

She was not sorry.

I rolled my eyes and turned around to dig through my bags. If I couldn't figure out what I wanted to eat, even though I was starving, I could at least put the food away.

Livy came over and peeked in the bags. "Oh. I get it now. The kids told me you'd gone to trade vegetables, but I had no idea what they meant; I should have known they meant you went to the greenhouses. Did you get rid of some of the zucchini?"

"Yes. Most of it, thank God. But don't worry, we'll have a new batch soon."

Livy groaned a little. "So much squash."

"So much squash. I swear, we planted the same size patch we usually do. It's just really enthusiastic this year."

"It's good, though, right? You can trade it for things. Like lettuce!" Livy picked up a fluffy head of lettuce and used it to tickle my nose.

I...giggled? Since when did I giggle? My cheeks heated, and I grabbed the lettuce out of Livy's hand, adding it to my armful.
