JUDE WRINKLED HER NOSE at the smell. It wasn’t so bad in the house, where she used dried lemongrass and essential oils to keep the air somewhat agreeable, but outside, breathing the fetid breeze turned the term “fresh air” on its head.

While Sky went down the front steps, Jude walked to the end of the wooden porch that overlooked the driveway. The lumbering wrecks shuffled up and down the length of blacktop, bouncing off each other and the house like the world’s most disgusting pinball game.

The male one wore a tattered T-shirt and jeans. Shreds of rotted flesh hung from exposed bone, and its milky eyes shone like dull coins. Jude winced at the chopping sound of its jaws as Sky approached it. She watched as he swung the bat, heard the hollow clunk when wood connected with skull.

Jude set her sights on the second one, about twenty-five feet farther down the driveway. Fuck the noise; she was going to blow a chunk out of its head.

“Pull,” she whispered and disengaged the safety, a wide grin on her face. She didn’t like to admit it, but shooting brought her much joy, whether it be a zombie or a can balanced on the fence.

The whistling crack of the air rifle ripped through the silence, and a hunk of flesh disappeared from the zombie’s head.

“Jesus, Jude!” Sky stage-whispered to her. “I told you about that gun.”

“Sorry,” she said, still grinning. Goddamn, that felt good.

“A little warning next time. Almost made me piss my pants.” He approached the third one and swung, his biceps bulging against the sleeves of his T-shirt. Another thunk, and the thing’s head burst, yellowish-gray and black goop flying. “Christ, that’s disgusting.”

The matter-of-fact tone of his voice carried clearly to Jude, who laughed. “Come inside.” With the gun in one hand and her crowbar tucked thumping against her leg, she turned and retraced her steps to the front door.

“I think that’s it.” His voice came to her clearly across the short distance. “Three down and—shit!”

The fourth one must have come from the bushes that lined the drive. As Jude watched in horror, the zombie slammed into Sky, knocking him to the ground and the bat out of his hand.

The rifle was useless with the two bodies tangled together. She couldn’t shoot the zombie without shooting Sky. She pulled the crowbar out of the loop on her belt and swallowed hard as she stepped off the porch. Something dry and warm brushed at her arm, then locked around her wrist.
