Chapter Twelve

Caterina

At the town hall the next morning, I sat at a table full of photos and journals that needed archiving, but my thoughts were far away from the musty records’ room. I was still smiling from my brief conversation with Benjamin. He’d called just to tell me he hoped I would have a good day and that he was thinking about me.

Swoon.

He was thoughtful and attentive. I kept waiting for him to give me a reason not to trust that this could be real. Every time I thought I couldn’t like him more he said or did something that made me sad I’d ever settled for less.

“Well, don’t you look happy,” Lorraine said as she placed another box of papers on my table. “The date with Benjamin must have gone well.”

I propped my chin up on one hand and let out a happy sigh. “It was perfect.”

Pulling up a chair beside me, she said, “Don’t tell me anything I can’t tell Keiona and Emmie. I’m meeting them for lunch today and you know they’ll grill me.” She tipped her head to one side. “You should join us.”

“I’d love to.” It wasn’t the first invitation to lunch I’d received from them, but it was the first one I didn’t hesitate to agree to.

Lorraine bit her lip and stood. “I should wait until then to hear about the date—that way you don’t have to say it all twice.” She made a pained face and sat back down. “I can’t wait until then.” She slapped a hand down on the table. “No, I need to be strong.” Then she laughed. “How about if I call them and we all go for a coffee now?”

I laughed while shaking my head. “I wouldn’t want to bother them.”

“Bother?” She took out her phone and sent a text. A moment later she said, “They’re on their way. Did you have breakfast yet? What is coffee without a little something to wash it down?” Another text came in and Lorraine smiled. “Emmie said her favorite donut flavor just came into season so she’ll start her diet tomorrow.”

When Lorraine stood I did as well. I grabbed my purse. “Does tomorrow ever come?”

We began walking to the door. “For her I hope it doesn’t. She’s just a few pounds over, but she went on a strict diet several years back and it was not fun. That woman does better with a little sugar now and then.”

“So do I.” I held back a laugh when Keiona and Emmie pulled up in a car almost as soon as we reached the front door of the building. “Wow, that was fast.”

“They were probably already on their way. When I spoke to Emmie this morning I joked that I’d get the most detailed version of your date because you know how people begin to simplify the more times they tell people something.” She chuckled. “I’m sure she called Keiona and told her what I said.”

As we approached the car Keiona lowered her window. “Don’t you dare say another word, Caterina.
