It was way past midnight, and most of the guests had retired. Malcolm should also be in bed, but this was the only time he could talk in private with Mrs. Turnpike. Not often did he dismiss his duties to enjoy life for a while, and he now felt guilty for not doing what his main purpose was to do with Ellsi⦠to get her to confess the truth.
At this point in their relationship, he wanted to be wrong about her. He wanted to convince himself that she wasnât a spy. There was no way such a sweet, caring woman with a childhood that sheâd had, would grow up and want to betray her country. Ellsi was full of love for her family and those around her. There had to be some mistake. His trusted informant whoâd told him about the French spy must have gotten his information wrong. Malcolm just couldnât believe she was the spy.
Being as quiet as he could, he sneaked across the hall to the other agentâs room and knocked softly. He prayed she had gotten his message about their secret meeting tonight.
Seconds later, her door opened and she motioned him inside and closed the door. Her room was dimly lit since she only had one candle burning on the table, but he could tell she didnât look like the older woman now. Of course, her hair was still colored gray, but the absence of her spectacles made her appear much younger.
âIâm glad you received my message,â he said in a low voice.
âHave you learned anything new about Miss Benson?â Mrs. Turnpike asked.
âNothing. I was hoping you had some information for me.â
Sighing heavily, Mrs. Turnpike folded her arms and shook her head. âAll I can say is if she really is the French spy, she is very good at her disguise. Not once did she slip up in front of me.â
Malcolm pushed his fingers through his hair. âMy thoughts are similar to yours. And yet, what about when sheâd disguised herself to come and see me at my room at the boarding house? That proves she has done this sort of thing before.â
âYes, it does, but it doesnât mean sheâs the spy weâre looking for.â
Malcolm rubbed the back of his neck. âWhat are your feelings on the matter? Does your gut tell you sheâs the one?â
Mrs. Turnpike frowned and shook her head. âI honestly donât dare answer. I think sheâs telling us the truth â that what we see is who she really is. But Iâve been fooled before, and so, I donât want to second-guess myself.â
Growling softly, he paced the floor. Confusion filled his mind, and he didnât know what to think anymore. No longer did his gut tell him she was the spy⦠or was his heart the one talking to him at all? There had only been one other time in his career as an agent where heâd mistaken the spy. Since then, heâd made certain he was more careful.
And then he met â and kissed â a very charming spy.
