Chapter Twenty-One

Nikki let out a loud groan as she stretched awkwardly in her seat. How she could have fallen asleep on such an uncomfortable chair was beyond her. But she had and was now paying the price for it. Gingerly, she pushed away from the desk and lowered her feet to the ground, rubbing the backs of her calves to try and restore some circulation to her tingling feet. She was surprised her blood circulation hadn’t been cut off. It was morning, which meant she’d been in that position all night. Seems I was more tired than I realised. Nikki glanced down at the pile of papers, Oh, no wonder. Trying to make sense of the B&B’s accounts was enough to comatose anyone.

Just as she went to push herself to her feet, Nikki caught sight of a leaflet with a yellow post it note stuck to it. Frowning, she picked it up. I’m sure that wasn’t there last night.

Seeing as there was only one other person in the building, it could only have been left by Jo.

Oh my God, I hope I wasn’t dribbling, or worse snoring.

Nikki quickly read the note. ‘Booked this place for twelve. I’ll be by my car at eleven. Please come. Jo x’

‘Hmmm,’ Nikki said noting the kiss at the end. Jo was offering the olive branch yet again.

Nikki peeled the note off and stuck it on her desktop, then flicked through the leaflet.

She knew she was going as soon as she saw the cost. Nikki couldn’t let Jo spend that sort of money and lose it because she didn’t turn up.

By the time Nikki had showered and dressed, her initial excitement had become a raging turmoil of exhilaration. She was going to spend the afternoon with the most gorgeous woman on the planet and she couldn’t wait.

In record time, Nikki was ready to go. Her backpack was loaded up with emergency weather gear just in case the weather report for a sunny day was wrong.

Before she slipped her phone into her pocket she checked the time. 10:59. It was time to find out what the butterflies fluttering around inside her knew that she didn’t.

Nikki grabbed her house keys and paused by the front door for a few seconds. As much as she couldn’t wait to see Jo again, she didn’t want to come across as being too eager. The seconds turned into a minute.

Deciding that was long enough, Nikki took a deep breath, exhaled slowly, and turned the handle, pulling the door towards her. Jo was stood by her car, a beaming smile on her face. Nikki couldn’t help but grin back as her gaze ran over her.

The jeans she wore fit her like a second skin, accentuating every gentle curve of her lower body. Her loose beige jumper hid her upper body from Nikki’s hungry appraisal. Jo’s blonde hair was flowing in the gentle, warm breeze and she flicked it back over her shoulders as if she were on a photo shoot.

Jo stepped away from the car and walked around to the passenger’s side.
